Kid's protective gear

Hi! My son had open heart surgery last X-mas 2006 for a congential heart disease (hole in the septal tissue between the atriums). He had just turned 2yrs. During surgery a stitch disrupted his natural heart beat. Three weeks later he had a permanent pacemaker put in. He thinks his pacemaker is special and he asks everyone "Wanna see my 'maker?" He is a very active, healthy 3yr old now and I'm looking for some sort of gaurd for his pacemaker (in his tummy). What I have found are way too big for him. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi makermom.

Your little man sounds just adorable, and well adjusted to his " maker. "
Someone posted something to that effect, a while back. I went looking for it and found it.
I hope you find it helpful.

Custom fitted chest protectors for kids and adults.
Posted by ladydi on 2-28-07.

I have found a comfortable chest protector for kids and adults. The website is www.allsportsarmour.com and they make shirts, similar to Under Armour, that have pockets in them. Included are shields which react to oxygen and moisture when the pouches are opened. Within 20 minutes the shields contour to your body. You then place these lightweight fiberglass shields into the pockets in the shirt. You can purchase a chest and rib protector shirt or a recoil shirt, which protects the ICD. They're great! ladydi

I have been looking too. I don;t think that there are any such protectors for kids under age 7 or 8. They are all too big. There is a member here who is developing one though. Please share here if you do come across anything! :)

HI Again!

Thanks for all your comments! I just finished writing a huge long comment regarding info I've found out about protective gear, but somehow the site logged me out and it never posted!! Now I don't have time to reitterate everything! Oh, well. It's Friday so I'll have to comment again on Monday when I'm back at work (I don't have internet at home - sad I know - we live out in the boonies). So you will all have to wait in suspense 'til then! Have a good weekend everyone!

Thanks for asking

Makermom, Your son sounds like he has the same heart condition as mine(7yrs old 1st grade). This summer he came home crying twice because his friends were playing football and they and he know he can't so he couldn't play. This is hard to explain to kids his age about how special they are and why they can't play. I know that as he gets older contact sports are totally out of the question but at this age some kind of protective device would be wonderful. But our cardiologist did say something interesting when we asked about youth wrestling. It probably won't hurt him or do any harm at this age but why get him interested in something that he won't be able to continue as he gets older.

He has had one since he was born and has brothers pouncing on him! I never bought anything and he has swam, played soccer, and now tball with it all fine. The docs say that the boys won't be big enough to hurt him until they are in jr high and weigh a lot. Hope this helps.:)
