Great medical discovery!

Are any of you old enough to remember "Dr Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery" that was painted on the sides of barns all over the mid west? Then the FDA came along and shut down all those kind of charltons and gave us the approved charltons that sell their wares on TV.

I saw an ad for some med just now on TV and an image of a barn jumped out at me from when I was probably 7-10 yrs.

I forgot about that one.

Didn't make you any healthier, but after a few good swigs of it you didn't care.

Most of those patent meds were mainly alcohol.

Hadacol

Frank,

Do you remember Hadacol? I think of that magic elixir when I see some of the commercials TV today. For those of you that joined our world within the last 50 years, you may not have heard of Hadacol. It was the rage in its time and below is what Wikipedia has to say about it.

"Hadacol was a patent medicine marketed as a vitamin supplement. Its principal attraction, however, was that it contained 12 percent alcohol (listed on the tonic bottle's label as a "preservative"), which made it quite popular in the dry counties of the southern United States. It was the product of four-term Louisiana state Senator Dudley J. LeBlanc (1894-1971), a Democrat from Abbeville in Vermilion Parish. He was not a medical doctor, nor a registered pharmacist, but had a strong talent for self-promotion. Time magazine once described him as "...a stem-winding salesman who knows every razzle-dazzle switch in the pitchman's trade". (Could this be an ancestor of our president?)

Just to show you how good this stuff was here is testimonial from its hey day.

"Two months ago I couldn't read nor write. I took four bottles of Hadacol, and now I'm teaching school." So says a 1949 radio testimonial for Louisiana's famous cure-all medicine.
