I am a 23 year old female and I have had my pacemaker for 6 weeks. My pacer was implanted because my heart-rate was dropping below 35 bmp, which was causing me to faint several times a week.
Since the surgery, I have had no other symptoms or complications...until now. Last night as I was getting into bed, I had this severe chest pain in my left side, just under my breast. It felt as though someone had tied my heart in a knot and was pulling it tighter, I felt the sensation 3 times, and then it went away. For about 30 minutes after the episode occured, my chest was very sore, and I could feel my heart pounding so hard that it was radiating into my neck and throat. I thought that it was just a fluke, and didn't think anything more about it until it happened again this evening. Any ideas of what this could be?
I am new to the site...just joined today...so glad that I found it!

Suggestion
by janetinak - 2008-01-06 02:01:46
You need to be seen like right now. Call your dr or go to the ER. This may be as simple as gas pain but I doubt it. As women we have a lot of vague heart pain but I strongly suggest you see a doc. ASAP.
Good luck, lets hope its nothing but you need to be sure. Please lets us know what you are told.

PM Adjusted!
by tcrabtree85 - 2008-01-06 04:01:00
Hi Amanda and Welcome to the club! I am 22 years old and if you ever need somebody to talk to feel free to send me a private message.
What to me it sounds very common to have this happen. It happened to me a lot when I first got my pm. It took a while for them to get my settings adjusted just right for me. I would contact you heart drs office Monday morning and let the nurse know exactly what you are feeling. She may tell you that you need some tests ran to make sure leads are ok and what not but likely you just need some adjusting done to your pm.
You are also young you are going to feel a lot more. I wish you luck and look forward to hearing what happens. As said if you need somebody to talk to send me a private message anytime. Sometimes I am slow at responding but I promise I will get back to you. Once again welcome!
Tammy

Welcome to this great club.
I've had my PM for 6 weeks too, and I have also experienced a few episodes of sharp, brief, left-sided, under breast pain, but nothing as severe as you describe. I just put them down to it simply being new since they only lasted a few seconds, and minutes later I was absolutely fine.
The other members have given you some good advice and I hope by now you've managed to seek medical help and are feeling ok.
Take care,
Shelly (UK)

A pacemaker suddenly quitting is no more likely to happen than you are to be struck by lightening.
Yes, be sure...

I also got a few serious pains in my left side and in the middle of my chest. Ended up in EMERG about 4 times (just to be sure.) Each time, they hooked me to an ECG and did a blood test.
All of these event turned out to be nothing serious - BUT
As you have been told by previous responses, you want to be sure and the only way to be sure is to been seen by a Doctor.
