After all was said and done....about $70,000. Thank goodness I only had to pay a $100 ER deductible.

My cost

I had mine done in 2005. The dual lead Medtronic was $12,000 and the wires were $5000.00 the Dr. was $8500.00 and then the hospital in my case it was $37,000 but that was emergency room and 3 days in intensive care. Mine was an emergency. So the total was $65,000. It would have been much less without the intensive care. That is very expensive. With a regular hospital stay I am guessing it would have been about $40,000 total. I was lucky with insurance i only paid about $2500 including the Ambulance. Bowlrbob

Here in Australia it can go two ways. Medicare covers the cost if you have no insurance. Mine was $50 one overnight excess payable on my private insurance. Our private insurance now says that if you receive a prosthesis ( including PM) which is not on the government contract list you have to pay for the difference. My tech assured me that no one will pay towards their pacemaker as our Medicare will pick up the extra cost. It is also considered by our public hospitals to put a pm in if needed as it works out cheaper than continual admissions and tests. Cheers Billie

$24,000

Hi- I just had mine put in August 2007- my Medtronic Dual Chamber was 14,000 and then the rest of my hospital bills were $24,000. Mine was higher than it should have been b/c I had some complications and they had to do this 3-D ultrasound that was expensive. The other prices people listed sound really high to me- I live in Virginia in the US so maybe its different here.

ICD implantation

by turboz24 - 2007-12-28 03:12:27

The Cost of my Hotel stay (and admission through the ER) for 4-5 days, including an attempted ablation, EP study, MRI, Nuclear Stress Test, dopler, and implantation of the ICD was 174,000.00 + any additional fees from the EP, groups, etc. Total "listed" bill was probably around 200,000. Now, the insurance company has agreed prices on all that stuff, so actual outlay was probably more around 110k. I know the actual ICD was listed at around 60K.

That much???

You guys paid THAt much??
I go mine at Wal-Mart for $35.00!!

Juuust kidding.
(Although who knows what the future holds...)

In Canada, it's covered under our Medical (thank goodness) so I have no idea. It is interesting to see the different costs associated with a PM though.

PM Cost

The cost of the Medtronic Dual Chamber was $35,000. I got it in June of 2007. The total cost was well over $100,000. We were told that insurance would cover it and after it was done our part of the bill was $70,000. What a mess! That was covering it at out of network. Sometime between the 2 week period of waiting to go up to Columbus for the surgery the hospital stopped taking our insurance. No one informed us or even said do you realize this is out of network. We have been in negotations with them and they are going to settle for us paying $10,000. Better offer but my medical expenses have tap us out! I am shocked at the different prices in the different areas. Good old America!

God Bless you all,
Amy

Difficult to answer...

Though there are numerous postings with dollar amounts stated it is a really difficult issue here in the US.. Depending on where you live, whether or not you are insured, what kind of insurance you have, PPO or HMO, in network or out-of-network, Medicare or Medicare HMO and so on. The numbers are all over the place with all of the contractural allowances and negotiated rates. Negotiated rates within the same insurance company or HMO will vary depending on the region. It is a great big mess when you really start looking at it. For instance, May 2006 my 2 days in ICU + pacemaker were billed at $43,000.00. The final settlement was $23,000 and that included the PM. But, we know the hospital did not lose money as they also have "deals" with the PM companies for cutrate prices, etc, etc, etc,. It is all very convoluted and I doubt at this point that any hospital truly knows what it is being reimbursed! I say these things because I have been an "insider" and a part of the problem that exists today - I do not say that with pride. Those old days when patients went to the hospital for several days for their "annual physical". Or, we let someone stay an extra day or 2 because the family was going away for the weekend. Little did we know back then what the eventual outcome would be.

Are you talking - actually having to pay out of your pocket? I paid nothing! What is it worth if I had too....all the money in the world as it is saving my life!

When I got mine, the total cost of the inpatient stay, CCU, doctors fees, labs, etc was well over $100,000. Now I am sure that the CCU was a large chunk of that change, so it may be less if you dont have to go in there.

Pacemaker Costs

I'm not being snotty, but answering your question is about like trying to tell you what a new car costs.

Mine cost about $40,000 in 2002, but from what I've seen the costs are all over the map.

There are so many different brands and features that my guess it is a pacemaker today can run anywhere from $30,000 to $100,000, or more. It just depends on what the patient needs.

My guess is based on you having it done in the U.S. In S.E. Asia they are cheaper. We have members from all over the world posting messages so it will be interesting to see what some of them say the prices are in their country.

Good luck,

$$$$$

I live in Southwest Florida. Had my PM implanted in October this year. Total cost including overnight stay in a semi-private room, Dr fees, etc. was almost $37,000.00. The PM itself I believe was about $22,000.00 Medtronic Dual Chamber. So far, my insurance is covering the cost but I believe that they were checking to make sure I had no pre-existings.

$130,000

by adean_1969 - 2007-12-28 12:12:57

Wow ... what a question! I will ask this and of course you don't have to answer, but why do you want to know? Are you having to pay out of pocket? Your insurance should pay a vast majority of it.

Answer: My pacemaker, not the surgery, hospital stay, drugs or anything, but just the cost of purchasing the pacemaker was $28,000. My hospital bill for 9 inpatient days and massive testing was close to $250,000 but we determined that the pm portion was about half of that.

Good luck to you and isn't this website awesome??!!

Interesting question

by Shelly - 2007-12-29 07:12:10

As belly321 has already said, we are very lucky over here in England to have the NHS, but we also have an option for private healthcare too. I had my PM via the NHS, but during the months that I was waiting for it, I did enquire what the cost would be to have one as a private patient.

I was quoted just under £6,500 GPB (almost $13,000 USD)

That was for 1 appointment with the consultant and the surgery for a duel lead PM. It would obviously be much more with tests, ECG, MRI scan etc..

That still seems pretty cheap compared to the US. I'm amazed by the huge differences in cost, not only from country to country, but in the US alone.

I suppose it must reflect how individual we all are!!!!

The prices that everyone has mentioned.....are you telling me that you paid out. Interesting.....as I being here in Canada did not have to pay a dime.

You know you're wired when...

You’re officially battery-operated.
