Deadly Heparin

There was a piece on the news this morning about bad heparin manufactured in China causing 19 known deaths. They didn't say what was wrong with the drug, whether is was ineffective or had a problem ingredient.
Just thought I would pass along this happy note for those who are using heparin.

Don't I know it!

Hi Frank,

Yep, "happy" note indeed - my boyfriend developed a blood clot in his lung last Monday and spent the better part of last week in the hospital on a heparin IV drip. (He's okay now, thankfully, and off the heparin.)

The news story really didn't help our stress levels... When I asked the nurses about it, they didn't have much to say other than to confirm that all of the hospital's heparin comes from Baxter. Great.

Read an article in newspaper that stated Heparin made in China by family business types (back rooms?) & some product in the drug causes 19 deaths in USA. It always amazes me how such an important drug can be farmed out with apparently no controls.

you have to wonder

by mandogrl - 2008-03-12 01:03:36

why we import stuff from other countries without making them meet our standards for testing. We shouldn't wait for an unusually high death count to concern us about their quality control.
I almost lost a cat from eating Iams (which she did for years). She was so ill for about a month, that I had changed the diet 2 weeks before the news story broke. I thought it was a possibly a food allergy! But they were adding a toxic ingredient to make the rice test as higher-grade rice so they could get more $ per ounce.

Rat poison is cheaper

We might as well us Decon rat poison. It has Warfarin in it and kill the rats with an overdose of thinner.

Seriously, I'm afraid this is just the tip of the iceberg.
