Throwing

My pacemaker was implanted in August and I am anxious to get back to throwing the hammer. Do you think this can happen without pulling the leads. Some have said stay away from that activity, Any help appreciated also what wt. Training exercises should be avoided? Thanks, Gary

Hammer Throwing?

Hi Gary,

What exactly is hammer throwing? Is it literally throwing a hammer? I have never heard of this before.

The only reason I say this, is that when you spin to get the rotation up you will be using all of your upper body especially the muscles in your upper chest.

That would not be a good thing. My normal cardioligst about had a frign stroke when I told him I went back to swimming after 4 weeks. But my implant doc had sen me before I went into the pool and said begin slowly.

I used to do 25-30 laps a day and now only 6. It would be better to have a little bit of patience then to tear one of those leads out.

Have a little patience. You'll be able to go back to it soon enough.

Ask your Doctor

Each patient is different and most Doctors allow different activities at various time frames. For example my Doctor said I could play tennis after six weeks but others have said their doctor said to wait until 8 or 12 weeks. Ask your EP.

Good luck

I'm curious

RE Hammer throwing

I know what hammer throwing is, and although not an expert, I would say to go about it slowly. You know your body better than anyone.

One word of caution......I play racquetball and work out regularly. When I had my PM put in, the Dr said to curtail most activities that involve repetitive motions of the arm. Well, my shoulder "froze". Medical name is "adhesive encapsulitus". It took 3 months of phy therapy to unfreeze it. So, do what your Dr says, but go ahead and do your routines, just do them moderately for awhile.

Hammer Throwing

Since my pacemaker device was implanted in August of 07 I have returned to weight training and preparing to compete in the Hammerthrow, discus, javelin and shot put. I started slow and have accelorated my training as I prepare for the NYS Senior Games. Boy do I feel good , stronger than last and hope to defy the rule that the older you get the harder it is to make those heavy implements fly far. We'll see. Best to all of you and especially to those who responded to my questions in the fall . Gary

I'm 43 and have had my pacemaker four weeks today. I'm looking forward to living another 50 years and this marvelous device inside me will help me do that.
