leg swelling

hi everyone,
I am very new to this site. I am a 22 with a pc. I am also a ballet dancer and teacher. I got my pc in feb and have been feeling very good compared to before my pc. I have had swelling in my legs and feet for a good week now and can't put on my pointe shoes. Has anyone had this symptom after long days on your feet? i called my dr. the nurse said nothing to be concerned with, yea that is easy to say they don't have to deal with it!

Hi and welcome to the site. I will also be 22 at the end of the month. I got my pm in March. I wouldn't let it go if your swelling last more than a day you need to go into your doctor and get it checked out. The risks of blood clots are high and you should just get it checked out. I wish you luck and if you ever need somebody to talk to I am always here. You will be in my thougths!

My gosh! I had swelling in my legs since the pacer as well. I work on my feet all day and I don't think that swelling to the point that our shoes don't fit is acceptable! I would and have, continued to voice my concerns. If one person didn't listen then I kept going until someone did. I figure that everyone has someone they have to answer to.... find that person is what I say. The swelling in my feet was a reaction to a medication. It was changed and now I'm doing better. Best of luck to you, Now may I suggest.... start asking questions until you get what you need, nicely of course. ;-)

Leg & Feet Swellin

by SMITTY - 2007-10-01 11:10:49

Hello,

Welcome to the PM Club.

I'm not a trained medical personnel, but I know that I'm smarter than that nurse that told you after having swelling of your legs and feet for a week was nothing to be concerned about.

You don't say why you got your pacemaker not that it really matter here, but having a PM says you have heart disease to some degree. All of us that have been treated for heart disease know that swelling of legs, feet and any other part of the body goes hand in hand with heart disease. Of course there are other things that can cause the swelling, so it may not be heart disease, but after having this problem for a week, I suggest that you find a doctor that will at least take a look.

I will venture a guess that your pacemaker is not the cause of the swelling but that does not mean that it is not heart related so it should be looked at by a doctor. Swelling of the legs and feet, almost without exception, means the retention of fluid and while this fluid retention may only be visible in you legs and feet, it could occurring in other parts of your body and by so doing increases the load on your heart.

So, my final word, it is better to be safe than sorry, please see a doctor.

Good luck,

Smitty

PS: I've never before communicated directly with a ballet dancer, so I just got to ask. Doesn't standing on your toes in those little pointe shoes hurt an awful lot?

You know you're wired when...

You can feel your fingers and toes again.

I am just now 40 but have had these blackouts all my life. I am thrilled with the pacer and would do it all over again.
