Key Fob/Keyless Cars

I'm about to lease a new car and it has a key fob. Never had a keyless car and I am wondering if these interfere with pacemakers?

Does anyone own a keyless car and experience issues with pacemaker?

Not a problem

It takes a fairly strong magnetic field to interfer with a PM (such as welding equipment). Your PM won't even know the key fob exists.

The short answer is that interference is very unlikely.

Traditional key fobs use a frequency of 433-MHz. Newer pacemakers with Bluetooth operate at 2.4-GHz, totally different.

433-MHz is widely used for all sorts of devices, many remote control.

The ranges are quite different, plus all are encrypted.

Any interaction would have been discovered years ago.Pacemakers are well shielded against unwanted interference.

If you want a good read on devices and radio frequencies, Google Wikipedia ISM radio frequencies which covers the rules on which frequencies can be used for medical and scientific devices and particularly how they must not interfere in order to be licenced for public use.

Nothing to do with PM but everything with key fobs.

i don't know where you live, but here in southern Ontario particular in the Greater Toronto area car theft is the number one crime. They target high end cars that use key fobs. If you hang them just inside the front door that's the worst place. Store them in an old kitchen pot or metal box. It's called a faraday shield. It's next to impossible to duplicate it wirelessly if it's shielded by metal.

Enjoy your new car

I appreciate the responses. Very helpful! I am very sensitive to my pacemaker since I rely on it 100% and have 3rd degree heart block so I'm always double checking making sure anything I purchase doesn't interfere with my ticker aka pacemaker LOL.

thanks :D
