Pacemaker pulsing me when on left side

I had my pacer installed in 2009. I only use it during sleep when heart pauses. Last year my use went down to only 4 episodes. I am currently on vacation and in the last month I've noticed when in bed if I lay on my left side it triggers the pulsing 6 times each time until I shift off that side.  Is this normal? I've never had this issue before.

Not normal. It sounds like maybe the leads have shifted but that would be virtually impossible after all this time. I would ask for an interrogation to see if anything is up with your leads. If you have a home monitor, you can initiate this yourself and let them know to look for it.

How are you aware that it is pacing you specifically 6 times? I don't feel my pacer.

Regardless, I do know that the heart responds differently depending on which side I lay. When discussing this with a cardio NP several years ago, she suggested that often the heart runs smoother when laying on the right, I tried her suggestion and found that did work for me. Apparently when on the left, there is some compression somewhere that can trigger arrythmias. Maybe that somehow relates to what you encountered.

Nerve stimulation

I had that happen recently also.  They had told me it's because the lead tip runs close to a nerve and was being stimulated by it.  They had said they could do some adjustments at the clinic to fix it.  When I would change positions to my back it would go away.  I didn't have them make adjustments because it wasn't bothering me to much.

Implanted in 2009?

That's quite a while even if it's not used a lot.

I don't know what the shelf life of the battery is, but self discharge and even the low power states of the processor consume power.

I had nerve stimulation affecting my left side when in ERI. Nothing to do with position or movement, but I was told it was a mode change caused by the low voltage.

The PM was changed the next day.

Get it checked.

Checked out issues

So I had my pacer checked again. Last time was Dec 2023. They said in one year I would go down to 6 month checks due to battery running lower.  This check regarding the pulses I was getting was interesting. They said my older Medtronic device was essentially running on almost empty and was during off at high voltage and that's why I felt it.  It was very uncomfortable.  Absolutely I can feel 6 pulses or 8 or 10.  Never felt anything before as it only worked as I slept. Apparently my hr must have dropped under 65 BPM. I'm scheduled for replacement in about 4 weeks. Not urgent. My pacer current was turned to minimum so as not to disturb me.

You know you're wired when...
