HOT TUBS

In the morning my wife and I like to go outside and have our coffee in the hot tub. This morning after sitting in the tub for about 30 minutes I felt a tingle or spasm where the pacer is at. So I got out of the tub, my heart rate was 106 bpm. The tub is set at 102 degrees. I have an appointment for a device check tomorrow. But my wife wanted me to post a message to the group.

Hot tubs

From Boston Sci site, Medtronic has the same advice:

Talk with your doctor before using a hot tub. It will not harm your pacemaker but hot tubs may affect your medical condition.

An answer I gave to a similar query a few years ago !

Hi Gunny

This may be helpful :-

.............................................................................

Once your incision is healed there is no good reason to avoid sitting in a tub of hot water BUT if your pacemaker " Rate Response" setting is switched on you may find that your heart rate shoots up if powerful jets go anywhere near the pacemaker site.

This is because your PM has a sensor which detects the vibration from the jets and assumes that you must  be exercising . It then sends up your heart rate to help you cope better with the perceived exercise,

I have experienced this in a hotel hot tub which had quite aggressive jets and it was quite an uncomfortable feeling . It is not life-threatening because there is a maximum heartrate which the sensor will take your heart up to .... but it is not a good feeling.

........................................................................

Let us know what they say at your device check as the above is just one possible explanation.

Ian
