TATTOS

Can I still get  a tattoo? I was planning a trip to Norway to visit my Tattoo Artist who use to be in California but he moved back to Norway. I plan on getting a tattoo on my right chest of a portriat of my Son, who passed two years ago

Sorry to hear about the passing of your son. đź’”My first child-a son died from heart disease at age two. No parent ever should have to bury a child.  Your son is yours for eternity. One day you'll be reunited.

In doing a quick search of our forum, I found these comments on tattoos. You can find more by using the microscope type button and doing a search here.

Hi!

I’ve had a pacemaker since I was 10 years old. I have had two kids and the pacemaker didn’t make any complications. Also I have asked my cardiologist and they said tats are fine just not right over. However; don’t disclose this to the tattoo studio because the one I disclosed it to refused to tattoo me without doctors note and the doctor wouldn’t give me one. Liability perhaps? I don’t know.

I've had several tattoos since implant without any issues, but that's just me. I can't speak for anyone else.

Whether you have a device or not, most in the medical field are going to advise you not to get a tattoo, JMHO

Infection and Bleeding risk would be my main concerns

PCO W, I presume the main concern is the bleeding and infection risk, not any magnet.  Personally I would keep the tattoo artist well away from the device area and maybe speak to your doctors about whether you will need to stop anticoagulation if you are taking any, prior to getting treatment and how soon you can resume it afterwards.  There will always be a risk when you stop and start anticoagulation for brief periods.  And of course any bleeding will spoil your tattoos.

I have gotten two tattoos since getting my device. Each time I spoke with my provider before hand and the only caveats were don't tattoo directly over the device, and to stop my anticoagulant for 48 hours prior. The artists were very thorough in cleaning my skin before, and applying a dressing after, with directions on how to clean the wound.

I actually contracted a localized infection at a puncture site for my last ablation. Seems that the tattoo artist had better aseptic technique that the hospital!

Yes it's fine

Just don't get it directly over the pacer. Anywhere else is fine!

THANK YOU

Thanks for all of the comments. My tattoo artist has done the majority of my moto-tats of my 24 years in the Marine Corps. This new one will be on my right breast area. I've already told him about the pacemaker and that didn't faze him.
