Metamucil and prescription drugs.

Do you wash your drugs down with Metamucil at the same time every day?

I used to, but was talking to my brother in law at his time share couple of weeks ago

He said i should not to do that, but delay one or the other by 2 hours.  Did a quick check, and he was right. So I switched and now I noticed that my BP is now a bit lower and steadier also the blood thinner I take is working better. Now I just look at my skin and just sprout a new bruise.

Absorption of prescription meds

by Gemita - 2023-07-19 06:35:41

Lurker, thank you for that reminder.  I suppose we should always refer to the Patient Medication Information leaflet when to take our meds, since some are best taken on an empty stomach, while others benefit from being taken with food.

I know that certain foods can affect our rate of gastric emptying which in turn affects the rate of absorption of some of our meds, so it makes a great deal of sense what you are telling us.  Of course so many things can affect medication absorption, particularly as we get older, so it is best to ask your pharmacist or your doctor, when and how best to take your meds.  Your diet, other health conditions, your age, weight and other meds may all affect a medication we might be taking.  Have a look at the following link abstract for further information.  You should copy and paste the link into your main browser to open:-

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/797497/#:~:text=In most instances, increasing the,in the rate of absorption.

I use supplements (magnesium) to speed up gastric emptying, so I might just have a word with my pharmacist too.

The one to really watch is grapefruit juice

by crustyg - 2023-07-19 12:12:38

Grapefruit juice inhibits a brush border enzyme in the small gut, so can quickly cause massive overdoses of medicines, both prescription and over-the-counter.  Normal dosage for oral medication takes into account how much of the drug will be broken down by the enzyme working normally, so 'turning it off' results in a much bigger dose => serious side effects.

One of the best over the counter, non-sedative anithistamines was withdrawn from the market after a few cases of serious (some fatal) heart rhythm disorders (Torsade de Pointes) where people hadn't read the package insert and had taken the treatment after drinking grapefruit juice.  Instead of putting a massive warning on the packaging the UK regulator forced the product off the market.  No-one knows how many car crashes have been caused by the more sedative antihistamines...

Why are you taking Metamucil ?

by IAN MC - 2023-07-19 14:05:35

I had to look it up .... I'm not sure that it's available in the UK .

I may have misunderstood you but you seem to assume that we all take metamucil ???

I see that metamucil is a fibre-based laxative. It is crazy to  " wash down your prescription drugs with Metamucil "  ..........unless of course you have some strange desire to have diarrhoea

You know you're wired when...

You run like the bionic woman.
