Pacemaker

Hi I had over 20 years of AF had 3 ablation Iver 12 cadioversions and 18 months ago had AV Node ablation my question is that I do a bit of indoor cycling classes and I find that my pacemaker does get up to speed when exercising and my legs just have no energy and when I feel my pulse it seems to not beating fast so the blood doesn't get to my legs that quick another so have to keep stopping.

If there is anyone out there who has had the same problem would be interesting. Kind regards Rod

Rate Response

Talk to your EP. Get him/her to adjust your rate response for doing cycling.  There are quite a few settings that can be changed.

Confused

You say that you don't have trouble getting your heart rate up to speed when exercising and you don't, only when cycling?

Cycling is one of the sports (swimming the other) where it's difficult to impossible to get rate response right.  The torso doesn't move enough to get the pacemaker to kick up the heart rate.  I find that doing anything more than just walking doesn't work well.  What I mean is that walking is fine but if I push a wheelbarrow, for instance, I'm instantly out of breath.  My pacemaker thinks I'm walking but in reality I'm expending a lot more energy. Stairs and hills are similar.

If you get a tech who knows really knows what he's doing, there may be a combination of settings that'll work but it's always a trade-off.

You know you're wired when...

Your ICD has a better memory than you.

A properly implanted and adjusted pacemaker will not even be noticeable after you get over the surgery.
