High BP & blood clots

Hi Tim, I hope you are feeling better and that your providers are giving you adequate treatment.

It looks like high BP has been an ongoing problem for you, but as far as I know, there is no correlation between that and blood clots in the lungs, also known as pulmonary embolisms.

Blood clots in the lungs usually arise from clots in the deep veins in the legs, that travel through veins, through the right side of the heart into the lungs. This can be extremely serious, as you likely know. Risk factors for blood clots include injury to blood vessels, blood pooling in the leg veins, or something that disrupts clotting--like smoking, or birth control pills or a blood disorder.

No, I have not experienced a pulmonary embolism, but have cared for patients in the hospital with them. The classic patient was someone who was immobile due to recent surgery.

Blood clots in the lungs

Sorry to hear you had a BP of 200/130 which is extremely high. Hopefully it was brought down before discharging you home. As to blood clots in the lungs, you would need to clarify the diagnosis with your PCP. CT angiogram and not a chest X ray, is the diagnostic imaging of choice, and you are generally hospitalized to treat that. As to BP, hopefully you are closely followed up by your PCP or the BP clinic!

Glad you sought help

A friend who doesn't have a pacemaker dealt with a blood clot in the lung. Terrifying and painful. Hospitalization was key. She is fine now but I know she tends to be concerned it might happen again.
