I have a pacemaker placed due to asymptomatic high grade AV block on 6/25/07. I had a lumbar fusion with instrumentation on 1/24/07. I was using a TENS unit for pain control and neuropathy in my leg. Just wondering if anyone knows if it is safe to use my TENS unit with pacemaker.

TENS & Pacemaker

Becky,
The following is the answer Healthtouch Online has for you question about using your TEN with your pacemaker.
TENS should not be used for people who have a heart pacemaker. The signals from the TENS unit could interfere with how the pacemaker works. Care should be taken when using TENS if you have any heart problems. Pregnant women should not use TENS. It is not yet known how TENS may effect an unborn baby. Do not put the TENS electrodes on your head or neck if you have problems with your blood or blood vessels. Also, do not put the electrodes on your head or neck if you have seizures (convulsions).

Hi, work for a very well respected Chiropractor. I am the Patient Coordinator and the Patient Therapist. I must tell you this: DO NOT USE THE TENS Unit on yourself. I always must ask every patient before E-Stim or TENS therapy "Do you have a pacemaker?" If they do, then no e-stim or TENS therapy for them. It could possibly interfere with the pacemaker. I do have a pacemaker and never have I, or will allow, anyone to "hook me up". perhaps you could try some ice therapy, 15 minutes on and 45 minutes off and never applied directly to the skin. Above all talk with your dr. the one who gave you the TENS unit. Pacergirl.
