Sleep Meds and pacemaker

Hi All I was prescribed Trazadone 50 mgs for insomnia. I always check w my cardio when prescribed a med from any doctor.

He said Trazadone pretty benign med See's no problem. Yet I have read cardio patients must be careful with conduction issues.

Anyone out there taking Trazadone with pacemaker?

Trazodone and PM

Trazodone is a mild antidepressant medicine that is used mainly as a non-addictive hypnotic (sleeping pill). You have been prescribed 50mg at bed time, which is a very small dose. Normally for depression, 400 to 600 mg a day are prescribed. So, 50mg is going to be safe for you, it will not affect your heart. I don't see why you should worry. Do you know why is no longer used as antidepressant? It's because the sedative effect of Trazodone is so strong at antidepressant dosages, that patients don't want to feel sleepy all day long. That's why Trazodone is no longer used as an antidepressant, only as a non-addictive sleeping medicine.

Thank you so much for your information. Yes, only for sleep is what it is for. I saw some info about it being hard on heart but can't believe everything in internet.

Need to quiet my mind at night. I lost my 27 year old daughter in a surfing accident A few weeks ago had terrible nightmare. Woke up to 164 bpm. Pacemaker seemed to settle in down. Cardiologist said transient tachy probably due to panic attack in sleep. Had my 3rd heart attack last year about 6 months after 2nd pacemaker implant.

Dear Echosmom, I'm a retired psychiatrist. I have used Trazodone with my patients for many decades. True sleeping pills and tranquilizers are all addictive. They help you to sleep at first, but pretty soon, you can't sleep again and you start increasing the dosage until you can't live without them. Trazodone doesn't do that. You can never become addicted to it. Sorry about your daughter's accident. If you witnessed the accident, you might be suffering from PTSD and need to see a counselor. A nightmare with tachycardia is common with PTSD. Drugs that trigger tachycardia are those that have a stimulant effect. Stay away from caffeine. Trazodone has no stimulant effect. Unfortunatelly, PM does not help with tachycardia. I hope Trazodone will help your insomnia.

Hello Echosmom,

I wish I had more advice to offer (I don't and it seems that TAC has you covered), but I just wanted to chime in and say that I am terribly sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how you feel.

I truly do hope that things get better for you. As they say, time heals all wounds. I don't know if "heal" is the right word for your situation, but I am sure with time and distance, you will slowly get better or find better ways to cope with the tragic incident that has occured.

Please stay strong and don't be afraid to reach out to the forums if you ever need anything! Best of luck to you on your journey. I hope your insomnia goes away and that you can return to a better "normal".

Take care and stay strong

Jer
