Pacer/defibrillator

I just got my pacer changed out for a combo defibrillator.  They also put me on Amiodarone.  I am so scared of the side effects.   I am 4 days on it and am so depressed and feeling like crying all the time.  I'm 59 and fear this is my life from now on.

Anyone have experience with this drug?

Thanks

JHF

Ameoderone

Why did they say that you need ameo? It's a powerful antiarrhythmic but it's also a very dangerous drug.my cardiologist and EP would only keep me on itfor six months at a time. MY EP said if I were older he wouldn't worry so much about it. It worked well but also damaged  my thyroid. Read the list of potential side-efffects. Many aren't low probably.

Ameoderone also has a very long half-life, on the oeder of months. After two or three months, half of is still in you system.

If it's for the short time, there probably wouldn't be any problems but it's not a long-term solution.

Amiodarone

Hi Jennifer,

I was on amiodarone for a while a few years ago.  I think it was after one of my ablations but it was relatively short term.  I generally felt lousy when I was on it and my research led me to believe that I did not want to stay on it for long.  Luckily I did not.  Talk to your doctor; likely it is short term and you will not have any lasting ill effects.  Good luck.

Amiodarone

Yes, I already have thyroid issues - hypo.  When they checked my pacemaker in the ER it had recorded a heart rate of 350.  V-Fib. Then I got the combo device.  I guess that is why they put me on the Amio.

Encouragement

Hi JHF, I don't have any technical info to add or similar experience to share (except that you and I are the same age :) but just want to send some encouragement your way. I hope things get better for you with each coming day.

Amiodarone

Looking for positives , Jennifer ......... you may be encouraged to know that amiodarone usage is enormous worldwide because it is such an effective drug.  In the USA alone, over 2 million prescriptions  are written for it every year.

It has been around for over 60 years for good reason and doctors clearly understand its side-effect proflle. Although side-effects can occur , do  remember that not everyone experiences any side-effects whatsoever !

Without doubt, your amiodarone should help prevent you having a recurrence of life-threatening ventricular arrythmias

Amiodarone in combination with your I.C.D. has put you in a much safer place !

Best of luck

Ian

My father loves amiodarone.

He has persistent a fib and has tryed all the other anti arrhythmic drugs. He swears by amiodarone but it is not without side effects.  Several months ago I actually requested to try amiodarone for my tachycardia but the docs told me I was too young and since it can be toxic and cause renal trouble they did not want to go that route.  If your feeling lousy on the medication maybe see if there is something else to try.
