There is no relationship between the covid vaccination and a pacemaker.

Covid vaccine/side effects - pacemaker - ongoing health conditions

Hello Louisb,

Having a pacemaker on its own will not cause us to suffer additional side effects from a Covid-19 vaccine, but of course members are not immune from any of the potential side effects of the vaccine just because they have a pacemaker.  I think we should be aware however that the reason for the pacemaker (the condition being treated) could be affected by a Covid-19 vaccine.

For example, I have arrhythmias (bradycardia/tachycardia syndrome). When I received the Pfizer vaccine recently I had a strong immune response to it and developed flu like symptoms over several days and was confined to bed.  Since my body clearly thought it was fighting a nasty viral infection, my arrhythmias increased and I had to take extra medication to control them until my symptoms subsided.  Nonetheless, I saw this positive strong response as beneficial in my fight against Coronavirus, even though it was unpleasant while it lasted.

I will go ahead with a booster vaccine when it is offered.  I do not believe my personal experience was normal.  I have spoken to many who have had the Pfizer vaccine and they have not had any troublesome symtoms, so were surprised to hear about mine.

Covid Vaccines

My daughter, who's had her pacemaker since 2012, just got her second dose of Moderna vaccine.

She said her reactions to the first dose were limited to slight soreness at the injection site.

Her reactions to the second dose were a bit more noticeable. She had a slight fever, redness and swelling at the injection site and felt achy and dragged out for a day or two. She said most of her coworkers who got the vaccines when she did had the same experience.

I'm sorry you had a rough time with your vaccine, Gemita. I've heard of a couple people who did- more with the second dose, though. I'd bet your arrhythmias are a reaction to any illness you get, I tend to have that happen to me as well when I get sick. Take care of yourself...

Not a scientific analysis

It's looking increasingly likely that a 'serious' reaction to the Pfizer vaccine indicates that you're already been exposed to SARS-CoV-2, whether you suspected it or not.  I *suspect* that a second dose for these folk won't actually be a good idea.

We won't know more until the post-marketing surveillance data is received and analysed.

I encourage *everyone* who experiences a significant 'flu-like' illness after the Pfizer vaccine - especially if it lasts more than 24hr - to go the MHRA website and fill in the online Yellow Card form:

Mary thank you, and yes, you are correct, my arrhythmias are often triggered by illness.  They were particularly nasty following the vaccine and lasted between 24-36 hours, unusual for me since they are usually short lived, max 4 hours or less.

crustyg yes, I will report my symptoms from the first vaccine. (Now reported).  I thought about doing this in any event.  I have already been in touch with my GP and Cardiologist/EP.  They believe I still have long Covid symptoms from April last year.  I will seek advice before getting my second dose.

Crusty,   I hadn't heart that.  Interesting.  I had the Maderna (second dose next Monday) but this is very interesting, particularly since it's not based on a weakened or inactivated virus at all.

I just want to share about the quality of life after my pacemaker, and hopefully increase awareness that lifestyles do not have to be drastically modified just because we are pacemaker recipients.
