Hi,
Our son is 5 1/2 yrs old, had PM (Medtronic) implanted at 1 yr. old after surgery to repair VSD. I am happy to say (knock on wood, and all of that) that he has had no problems with his PM and is doing great. He is scheduled to have surgery to replace PM as the battery is running low. We are told that he will go in on a Monday and come home the following day and can go back to school the next day. Just wondering if anyone has any experience w/ a PM replacement w/ a child of this (approximate) age....Not that I doubt our drs, just a worried
Mom. And, his PM is in his abdomen.
Thx for any help!

The experience of having a couple of lengths of wire fed into your heart muscle and an electronic 'box' tucked under the skin is not an insignificant event, but you will survive.

I've never had experience replacing a pm in a child but my own has been replaced 4 times now. We tend to bounce back quickly from replacements because it's very minor surgery but next day back to school seems a little overly optimistic. He may feel up to it but what's the rush? If they use a general anesthesia it can stay in your system for a few days. Taking something for pain at school could be a problem. I don't know about your schools, but mine make you jump through hoops just to give a kid a tylenol during the school day. How about doing it on Thurs or Fri and giving him the weekend? Or do it before a long weekend or even spring break so he has an extra day or two to chill out. Good luck! We have a few teens here who have been through replacements, hopefully they will chime in.
