I"d like your thoughts on this...

I just had my pm placed 4 days ago. We are booked to embark on a cruise to Hawaii on March18, 2020. Do you consider me having this procedure 4 days ago putting me at a higher risk of more sever complications should I contract Covid19?

Look what's happening in San Francisco Bay right now.  That'd be a bummer!

Covid19 risk after surgery

From what I have read, Covid19 is a threat to the respiratory system, so I suspect not an extra risk for you.  However, the body takes six to eight weeks to heal, so you should presumably avoid swimming and using a hot tub anyway.

My concern would be

more about my pacemaker than the virus because presumably you would require a check up at 6 weeks following implant and possibly some setting changes.  If you are away how could your doctor check that all was well ?  How long is your cruise and has your cardiologist/EP given you the go ahead to travel.

A cruise sounds wonderful but not sure I would want to set out on a journey in the present climate.  Too many unknowns and potential disruptions, but only my opinion.

PM, China Virus, and cruise

The China Virus wouldn't be a concern, unless you had some lung/respratory issues or heart failure, as well as a pacemaker. The virus shouldn't affect your pacemaker.

I'd be more worried about infection or other complications and being out of range of your doctors, so soon after PM surgery.

The bottom line is that you really need to ask your EP. He knows more about your condition than we do.

Travel

I flew the day after I got out of the hospital and had to be taken off the plane by paramedics and ended up in the hospital in another province with a $1,000 ambulance bill. Make sure you have travel insurance

ask your doctor

If your doctor says it's ok, then it's ok. If it's been less than 30 days, stay out of the pools and hot tub, they are germ factories and you'll still have a minimal infection risk from the incision. As for flu risk, wash your hands, and personally, I'd stay away from the buffets. Not because I have a pacer but because people can be stupidly careless. Your doctor can tell you if you are a higher risk of complications from any of the flu's but if the pacer fixes what's wrong then it's probably not an issue. Enjoy your cruise.

A pacemaker suddenly quitting is no more likely to happen than you are to be struck by lightening.
