Tanning beds

It is a week today that I had a CRT-D implant. We have a trip booked in April for a Caribbean destination. We always go tan in a tanning salon for a few visits before our trip. Can I still go tanning with my device implanted.

Thank you

Bev

Use of a tanning bed

Yes you can use a tanning bed  with an implanted pacemaker/ICD as the ultra violet radiation used is only skin deep.

Scar tissue does not tan. There is evidence that UV radiation weakens wound healing.

Should you irradiate your skin?

See https://www.who.int/uv/faq/uvhealtfac/en/index2.html

The youngest person with malignant melanoma I have seen was 27 years old. She had a chunk of her leg removed and survived to see her children grow up. Lucky!

My pal in New Zealnd specialises in removing skin maligancies and is really busy.

The new immotherapy treatments for malignant melanoma are so much better than the chemotherapy. It is a horrible illness.

Melanoma is a high price to pay for a tan.  I have been a melanoma sufferer with lymph node involvement.  It is a rapidly spreading skin cancer and can be difficult to treat once it has spread from its original site.  Tanning beds are extremely dangerous and increase the risk of developing all types of skin cancer, especially melanoma.  Natural sunlight is safer and gives us Vit D, but I avoid lying in the sun now or going out between 1000 and 1400 hours.  Enjoy your trip and stay safe

Tanning bed isn't going to hurt your pacemaker but, as Slwyn alluded to, it's not going to help the healing at all.

Whether or not you want to risk skin cancer is up to you. Like smokers for the last 75 years, at least, you well know what the risks are. If vanity trumps safety,  sobeit.

Congrats

May the force be with you.  You just got your implant and planning your next vacation.  The tanning bed will give you a tan so you don't burn 15 min. after you hit the beach.  Go for it.  You deseve a great vacation.  Worry about skin cancer AFTER you get back.

Best wishes.
