Hello, can anyone advise whether a heavy fall can affect the settings on my st Jude pacemaker.

Certainly not any fall that you would survive. They are tough beasts.

Thanks AgentX86 for your prompt response. Could I ask if you are medically trained or are you just sharing your own experiences

Just sharing personal stuff and what I've read since first threatened with a PM

I are an electrical eng-in-eer (about 50 years designing electronics stuff).  I've liked to take things apart to see how they work since I was knee high (I had less success puting them back together).  No, I haven't taken my PM apart.  ;-)

How do I know?

About 6 months affer recieving my pacemaker while walking my dog one morning, I slipped on black ice and fell. I broke my left wrist--same side as pacemaker--severely bruised my hip, hit my head on the pavement and wound up with a black eye.

It didn't hurt my pacemaker at all.

Our pacemakers's innards aren't like the parts in a clock or watch. The pacemaker is not mechanical. It is electronic, sealed in a titanium case. You can't break it. There aren't any "parts" to jar loose or out of position.

AgentX is exactly right. Any fall you can survive, your pacemaker will come through without injury.

I had my PM implanted on Jan 22.  Night of 23rd I got up and wandered around the house, bumped into a chair, fell on the chair, then hit my hear on the TV cabnet, then fell onto the floor.  We had to call the EMTs out to get me up.  My incision looks kinda bad, and I am going in tomorrow to check the PM.  But haven't had any bad feelings from the PM.  The PA told me not to worry about that part as I would definitely know if I did something to it.

You cannot change the bits, ones and zeros, in the pacer by falling or any kind of hit.  I have taken a couple really good hits on mine, no issues.

In general the biggest problem is damage to your body, your skin/body will get hurt long long long before the pacer, you would have to get stabbed with the right instrument at the right place to have any hope of affecting the device and in that case it still isnt a settings thing it is a broken device/leads thing.

Changing the settings requires special equipment like the box used when you go to visit the doc, cant change those settings mechanically.   And cant accidentally change them electrically (static zaps, standing close to a speaker, sticking your finger in a socket, etc) either.

You know you're wired when...

A thirty-day guarantee is not good enough.
