Supermarket and Tachycardia

Has anyone gone into a store, and had a heart rate spike?  For the past couple of weeks, every time i walk into a supermarket my heart rate spikes. It goes from a normal of 75-80 to between 105-110.  I have a "kardia" device that performs an ECG.  I normally shop at my local Vons in the San Diego area.  After this started, I went to several other supermarkets not owned by Vons/Safeway, and the same thing happened.

I have a Medtronic adapta. Implanted in 2009.

SEND IN AN ECG RECORDING

When you next experience this, record and send ECG in to your PM clinic for their assessment.

Are you passing through any security or anything that could trigger these spikes in heart rate ?  Are you nervous about going into supermarkets for whatever reason, perhaps wondering how much all of this is going to cost you ?  Christmas is an expensive time and strong emotions, whether of excitement or worry can easily push up our heart rates.

In the meantime, try to stay calm, especially if those spikes of higher than normal heart rates are not long lasting.  Enjoy your shopping

It is interesting that in the 12 months before I was fitted with a pacemaker for bradycardia caused by Sinus node problems some supermarkets caused my heart-rate to rapidly FALL as I entered the stores.

I confirmed this with a heart-rate monitor , recorded figures on several occasions and discussed the findings at length with my cardiologist who was very interested . He did a literature search and found documented evidence of this phenomenon.

Although my friends attributed this to my fear of spending money, it did seriously happen so consistently that I stopped using certain supermarkets, two  in the UK and one particularly bad one in France.

Over time the bradycardia started appearing in other locations culminating in me fainting at the end of a 10 mile run which led to a pacemaker being fitted.  But the very first signs that I had Sick Sinus Syndrome were those episodes triggered off by walking into certain supermarkets. It does seem that some store security systems can interfere with the heart's electrics whether you have a pacemaker or not.

Since having a pacemaker I don't have any problems with any stores... sorry to hear that you do, Quemal.

Strange as it sounds...

I'm having trouble right now with intermittant pacemaker mediated tachycardia. The spells happen at other times too, but they are guarenteed to happen in the supermarket.

Because I have several food allergies, I stop to read every label, even if I've bought the product before. (They can change ingredients without any warning or notice.) I have attributed the heart issues to the fact that in the supermarker I am frequesntly standing still. But who knows?

I certainly don't discount your experience.

Don't those Kardia devices have a recording function? Maybe recording some data would halp you see if there really is a pattern, and what the pattern is.

Thanks to all.  My primary Dr. is the one that told me about the Kardia device, and gave me his email address, so I emailed the ECG's to him. This is also how we were able to confirm my A-Fib.  He told me that even though the rate was high, the electral impluses were normal and not to worry.  He said if the tachycardia becomes bothersome to contact him and he will change my meds.

I have printed out the ECGs, and will show them to my Cardiologist the next time I see him.  I also think that the cause is from some sort of anti-theft system in the store.

A properly implanted and adjusted pacemaker will not even be noticeable after you get over the surgery.
