Pacemaker complete change

Hi

I recently had my pacemaker replaced after 10 years under local anaesthesia.

However post the change, i started loosing weight and have lost my appetite altogether. Very recently the symptoms strated getting worser. And I have lost almost 5kg in one month. Doctors are unsure to why that might be.

Will very much appreciate anyones input on the matter.

Thanks

It's easy to blame everything on the pacer, but all the pacer does is make your heart beat faster. The new one should be doing that the same as the old one so my guess is the timing is coincidence. Have you been to your gp for a general work up?

You have to decide..

..whether the change is directly, causally related to your changed PM or not.  You haven't told us whether it's the same make/model as you had, if the settings have changed etc.

The ancient Romans understood this puzzle well: post hoc, ergo propter hoc.  After the event, therefore because of the event.  It's a warning that just because there's a link in time between things, doesn't mean that they are actually cause and effect.

If the change *isn't* caused by your new PM and any associated lifestyle change(s), then you're looking at a bleak problem.  At your (ok, *our*) age, complete loss of appetite and sharp weight loss doesn't often have a happy ending.  If you want to push your doctors to start taking this seriously be prepared for lots of blood tests and some unpleasant tasks for yourself.  This is the Odyssey - a long, meandering journey with lots of false starts, detours and dangerous interludes - especially if one of the non-specific blood tests comes back raised (e.g. ALP).

Every doctor can recount tales of patients who suddenly lost the taste for smoking / drinking / eating for no particular reason, investigations were started, some odd findings were uncovered, and along the way complications set in, frequently as a result of the more invasive investigations, often triggered by diagnostic imaging.

On the bright side, this would do for late onset coeliac disease, which *does* have a happy ending.  If you have the right symptoms, and a simple blood test to set the diagnostic ball rolling...

Weigth loss could be a blockage....

My sudden weight loss appears to be caused by a blockage.  My guess from what I've researched, an catheterization procedure knocked lose some arterial plaque that a few weeks later broke off and lodged in my iliac artery in the area near where the arteries that feed the lower part of digestive track.  I've been charting my food intake and started drinking a "Boost" protein drink daily.  Make sure you get the higher 20 gr protein one!   Only way to see it is with CT Scan of abdomonal aorta (with contrast).  Good luck, hope you find your issue and can get it resolved!
