My doctor "thinks" I may have cellulitis in a toe adjoining another that has athlete's foot in the toe cleft they share. I have peripheral neuropathy so I never felt the athlete's foot in the cleft (normally I inspect the spaces between my toes daily but I've had a bad case of sciatica and bending my leg is very painful) of my toe. My first notice there was a problem is the second toe was red half way down and swollen. I treated the athlete's foot and it was healing nicely by time I could get to a doctor 4 days later. The redness on the second toe had not progressed and the swelling did seem to go down a bit. I saw a dermatologist who poked at that toe for a good 5 minutes and just couldn't decide if it was or wasn't cellulitis. There's no heat or fever, and even when he squeezed it I felt no pain. Even with my neuropathy I should have felt pain if it existed when he squeezed it. He put me on antibiotics and the swelling decreased and redness has not spread. I think it is lighter. I'm only on day 3 of the antibiotics. SO...
Then someone scared the willies out of me and said that the cellulitis could make a sudden beeline to my PM wires, straight to my heart and I'd be dead. AHHHHH! Anyone have any knowledge that can help? I've searched online but all I find are PM's that are, themselves, the source of the infection...not the case here.
Thanks!

The doctor I saw was a dermatologist. We don't have a podiatrist worth a darn in our city or anywhere within 300 miles. I see a wound care specialist on Monday and an Internist on Thursday. If it gets worse I will go to the ER but it has definitely improved since I started the antibiotics. It's just not totally gone. I just didn't know that it could go THAT fast from a so-so toe to my heart and...dead.
Thank you so much. Verne

You are on top of it....you are not going to die from it, you are seeking out proper treatment and not ignoring it.
You're doing the right thing.

I am no expert, but I believe that without the defibrillator that I have, I would be dead.

I would find a good podiatrist and be seen as soon as possible.
You need a definite answer and then treatment.
