Pacemaker surgery last week

I'm 48m and had a complete av block stemming from a heart attack I had 2 months ago. I'm one week out from the implant. I've never been part of an online support group and thought I should give it a try.

I'm having a hard time coming to grips with the heart attack and now with the pacer. I have been fairly active but now can't seem to get out of bed and am constantly checking my HR to be sure the pacer is working.

sometimes i would wake in th enight and feel a sense of impending doom and check my pulse. when i felt fully awake i went back to sleep and realized each time that everything was ok. now i dont do that but at first i did. my subconscious was always saying that something could happen. i just kept reassuring myself. after sometime i was not doing that anymore. it's often a real shock to know you are battery operated but arent we lucky that it's there. some people adapt quicker than others.  i wish you well and hope that you can just relax. jessie

It's part of the greiving process....

It's all part of the greiving process that we all go through.  Some adapt faster, some seek outside counseling.  Learn about your illness, what you need to do to help, what you need to avoid.  Carefully discuss with close family, most won't understand but you'll eventually learn how to best communicate with them.  It will be a struggle, but as with everything in life, we push through.

Good luck!

But I think it will make me feel a lot better. My stamina to walk is already better, even right after surgery. They had me walk all around the floor before they would release me. I did so without being exhausted and winded the way I had been.
