ICD Iplant and Exercise

Hello to group, my first post so I have a Medtronic ICD and I really appreciate input or opinions, I'm 69 Years and like to exercise and weight lift but I've had to somewhat restrict my weightlifting, now I've been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and will undergo Hormone therapy, one of things that can help is weight training to help prevent bone density loss, my question is looking for input regarding ICD implants, leads and relate to weight lifting, anybody else have an implant and do weightlifting ?

You shouldn't need extreme weight lifting to help with bone density.  After the six, give or take, weeks after surgery, you should be able to return to any reasonable exercise routine.  In any case, you really need to consult your EP.  We have no way of knowing the whole picture and it would be silly for us to prescribe an exercise program for you.

why restrict?

Why have you had to restrict exercise recently? Just having a device doesn't automatically mean we have any restrictions. The underlying reason why we got it may, sometimes placement may make some moves uncomfortable, but if you are cleared for exercise, you should be able to do what you want. When in doubt, talk to your ep. Sometimes cardiac rehab is helpful, get in a routine while under medical supervision.

Good luck with your treatment.

The weightlifting I do is Kettlebell Sport, and I do this competitivley, this is what I want to continue to do as I've had excellent results in the past and it is my main exercise, what I'm really looking for is who out there continues to do weightlifting exercise and are you concerned with the implant leads.

It's not the ICD it's the underlying heart condition!

If you have an ICD it's likely your suffering from heart failure and high risk for sudden cardiac death.  An ICD will not do anything to improve your heart function.  It will only monitor for eratic beats or heart stop and then shock the crap out of you.  So, as far as exercise, it's you heart condition not the ICD that would limit your activity.

I have a pacer, not an icd, and I am cleared to exercise without limits. I don't worry about my leads or box at all. I'm not sure what Kettlebell Sport is but I do Crossfit which includes all sorts of kettlebell moves as well as barbells, hand weights, pull ups, push ups and a lot of cardio. I do what everyone else does and I don't hold back, 7+ years now and no issues. The boxes are titanium, the leads are flexible and intended to move with us. It's up to your doctor how hard you can push your heart but the devices can take whatever we dish out.

You know you're wired when...

You participate in the Pacer Olympics.
