Kardia Mobile--Is it for me?

I've looked at the Kardia Mobile from AliveCor several times, wondering it I should get one. I've been put off by two things

1. the ads stress it's usefulness in A-fib which I don't have

2. the ads specifically state that it's not for use by people with pacemakers which I do have.

The reason I want the device is that I have some sort of arrythmia that has started up in the last couple of months. It doesn't feel like anything I've had before. It might not happen for days or weeks, and then I might feel it many times a day for several days. Occasionally, it's debilitating.

Based on past experience, I have no reason to think my pacemaker is recording anything.

I have a checkup coming in a couple of months. I'd like something to take to the EP and so I could say this. This is what's being recorded when I feel the arrythmia.

Could I reasonably expect the Kardia to record some odd arrythmia?

How techno-savvy do I need to be to use it? (I had to have help to connect up a DVD player)

What are the downsides? Too finicky? Unreliable? Other?

Any thoughts, those of you who have one?

I get a lot of unreadable. Some possible Afib when I am petty sure I am in Afib and some Normals.   It will not give any other readings.  Will not give PVCs etc.

Works but you have to have some basic knowledge of EKG

Hi!

I do have that little thing and I find it works ok, but you have to know what your "basal rest normal" EKG looks like, in order to see if when you use the device if there is an abnormality. Like the previous person said, it doesnt call PAC's or PVC's, but you can see them. When I had my second episode of Afib, I recorded it, sens it to my email and showed it to the émergence doc. He found it useful. I have Afib and it does call it pretty accurate. I don't have a PM yet but I don't see why peolple with PM can't use it. Is it because if your 100% paced I doesn't read your heart beat accurately?

I bought it on Amazon and could return it if I didn't like it. I ended up keeping it!

As for the tech part, yes maybe you'll need some help at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's a pretty cool little thing! I'll try to post some pictures in the gallery of my basal EKG and the Kardia EKG so you can see how it looks! Just give me a couple of minutes, or hours!!

Hope it helps!

Pictures done!

Kardia Mobile

by AgentX86 - 2018-06-25 22:24:49

Your best bet is to ask this question in stopafib.org.  There are a lot of people over there with a Kadia Mobile and some are really knoweldgable about the best way to use them.  For example, some arrythmias are only picked up on some leads of the standard 12-lead EKG,  There are tricks to using the Kardia Mobile to show these arrythmias (touch the pads to one finger and the opposite foot).  Lotsa information.  The consensus on stopafib.org is that it's a great device.  I haven't seen anything regarding pacemakers, there, though.

I didn't buy one because my cadiologist wasn't hot on the idea and didn't really use the information I gave him.  He didn't seem interested in using the Kardia Mobile data, so didn't think it worthwhile.  Now with the PM running everything, it doesn't seem very useful at all. Nothing can be done about my flutter anymore, anyway.

Kardia Mobile if you have a Pacemaker

by Heart-Rhythm-Center.com - 2018-06-26 16:04:46

Dear Gotrhythm:

1. If you have a pacemaker (and electrogram recording is turned on), the device will automatically record any abnormal rhythms so Kardia may not add that much useful information though it can certainly be used. Most pacemakers have the ability to save these recordings and at your device check, simply let them know the date and time of your symptoms and they may be able to correlate an arrhythmia to your symptoms.

2. If there are no rhythm abnormalities recorded on the device, check with your pacemaker clinic and see if Auto-Threshold is ON. This is a setting whereby your device will automatically check lead function and sometimes patients can sense this happening. Turning it off may alleviate your symptoms.

3. Relay your concerns to the doctor that implanted the device. There are other issues that can cause symptoms besides arrhythmias. Please see a free article the describes complications of pacemaker implantation and you may find you are battling one of the many issues that can arise after pacemaker implantation (https://www.intechopen.com/books/current-issues-and-recent-advances-in-pacemaker-therapy/complications_of_pacemaker_implantation). If this article is a bit complicated, What is a Pacemaker? is a useful book geared towards patients that give in-depth explanations of pacemakers (https://read.amazon.com/kp/embed?asin=B00CQB22W0&preview=newtab&linkCode=kpe&ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_23OmBb228N4KV).

Hope this helps.

Thanks to all

Still considering whether the Kardia might be useful. I appreciate the input.

It's wonderful that with Pacemaker Club there's always someone to turn to.

I love the kardia band

I have the Apple Watch one. I decided on that one because my problems with my heart are from exercise. So it only made sense to have it on my wrist. I used it before my PM and still after. I wasn’t sure if I could after but my EP doctor still likes when I send him my STRIPS.  It says on the alivecor website to talk to your doctor about using it with a pacemaker. It was my docs idea to use it after so I’m using it. I thought I was done with this thing. Lol. I just bought the kardia regular one because I sweat too much at the gym and it doesn’t read well with sweat. I figured it was worth the money since I’m still in the new phase of getting my settings right. Still not right and I’m 17 days post surgery.
