Being nervous is fine. I’ve had valve surgery as well as the PM, and this was truly a lot easier. I was nervous anyway. But you will be in good hands. It is generally uncomplicated, and the team has likely done hundreds of procedures! At most, you should only be in the hospital overnight, and they monitor for potential problems. Bring a book, and your phone. You’ll be out and back home before you know it!

oh, and meditation can be useful. Breathe deeply, it’ll help calm you.

Had pacemaker surgery 3 weeks ago.

you will notice the surgery team get ready as if they are doing this all the time.

you are nervous, but they are calm.

my procedure lasted about an hour.

Hopefully your surgery will be routine. If the surgery team is relaxed, you should be the same too.

you'll do fine. Get a good nights sleep, and be grateful for the surgery that will make you feel better!

They really do know what they're doing.  I had mine implanted four months ago and had both the PM and an AV ablation at the same time.  I was out of the hospital the next morning and back at work the following day.  Sure, it's scary. You don't know what to expect but after you'll likely wonder what all the angst was about.

Wow!

Try this.  You sund like you are scared witless ( my spelling leaves something to be desired), so chat up the OR crew.  You'll be amazed at how friendly they are.  They KNOW how scared you are.  They have them that way every day.  Just who do you think goes in there giddy at the thoughts of some dude they barely know mucking around in their one & only heart w/ sharp instruments - pretending he/she is Capt Ahab about to strike a fatal blow to Moby Dick with a harpoon.

So they wheel you into the OR fully conscious on a gurney - or maybe they have you WALK from your prep room to the oR, like the last time I had my PM changed out.  I had to climb up on the table w/o help!  Start w/ a cheery "Hi, Guys!  I'm Fat jack from Kokomo.  How you doing today?  BTW, I'm scared out of my wits, so help me out here."  Ask them their names are & what they all do.   They'll be glad to talk to you.  Last time I found out that the head nurse was an Army Vet who had been a Tank Engine Mechanic stationed at the same post I was assigned to.  But not at the same time.  He was a tad younger than I, to say the least.  Collectively we had a jolly good time till one of them says "It's time to go, been great talking to you."  So 7 seconds later, I was gone & the real fun began.   That was at about 1:30 PM.  Next thing I knew it was 10 PM when I awoke with a start & said to my wife "I'm hungry, can you get me a sandwich?"

At age 20, I will be getting a pacemaker in few weeks along with an SA node ablation. This opportunity may change a five year prognosis into a normal life span! I look forward to being a little old lady with a wicked cane!
