No medical insurance

does anyone know the self-pay cost of a dual lead pacemaker.  I am 64 and not eligible for medicare yet, not untill May 2018.  My only income is surviour benifets of my late husband.  I do not have insurance, could not even afford O'bama care payments.  My pacemaker in August 2016 had about 19 mo of batter life, so I am near the end.   I have complete heartblock so I am 100% dependant on the pacemaker.  Does anybody have any advise on what I should do.  I have no savings,  I do have a very small home a bank might let me use as collateral for a loan, but I really have no way to make any sort of monthly payments.  Any ideas on what I should do would be appreciated.  I am pretty sure the battery can not last until May 2018.  If I should prepare for my death, please be honest and let me know what you think.

Look into SSI and or Medicaid.  Try www.SSA.gov and www.medicaid.gov to read some info.

You can also speak to a Patient Advocate at the local hospital.  They are there to help and guide you through the bureaucracy.

Good luck.

Thank you,  I tried for medicaid and I am just BARLEY over the income level.  I already receive SS drawn on my late husband each month (my only income.)  Thanks for advice about Patient Advocate.   It is getting really close to the wire (no pun intended) but, I am loosing hope.

Contact your state representatives and explain your situation.  They are there to help in these instances.

Since you already have a pacemaker, have you spoken to your doctor for possible suggestions?

Already stated contact ideas are sxcellent. I wish to add to the list.

Also try to talk to a hospital social worker.  In a larger facility this will be a different professional.  A social worker may have more suggestions for assistance and should give you a no cost consult.

Check universities for free clinic services.  If the university has any type of medical degree program it may have free care clinics.  This is just another avenue to get more information that my get you the help you need. Finding the person who has the knowledge and ability to get you the care you need is the trick.

Also when talking to the hospital people talk about self pay discounts and payment plans.  They should offer a payment plan on a sliding scale based on your income. A small but regular monthly payment should keep creditors away, if that mstters.  What I am trying to say is do what you need to do get the medical care you need.
