Hello all. I will be receiving my pacemaker this Tuesday. I will be staying one night in the hospital, and then will have a 4 hour drive home. My question is, do you think the 4 hour drive is a good idea the day after placement? Or should we plan on staying one more night in a hotel before we head home? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Just watch where the seat belt goes. It should not rub the surgical site. If necessary put plenty of padding between the belt and the site. It is important to wear a seat belt for a 4 hourly drive.
Vibration is not likely to cause any displacement of the leads or device as these are 'fixed' at implantation.
I think most people do go home the day after by motor transport without trouble.
Hope all goes smoothly, as the vast majority do,
Selwyn

Go home and enjoy a good night's sleep in your own bed. I am about 3 hours from where I had my defibrillator placement. Wear your seatbelt and don't worry. I have never had trouble with my seatbelt due to sub-pectoral placement. Bring a small pillow to put between your pm and your seatbelt if you're concerned.
Car ride - thank you

Thank you all so much. It should be mostly smooth (Houston to Dallas). My husband is a pretty good nurse, but I will have 2 kiddos anxiously awaiting my return. I think we will plan on driving home Wednesday, but will definitely stay open to the possibility that I may not feel up for it. Here's to being bionic!
Wow - train is not an option!

I agree with the comments of other posters, but out of idle curiosity I thought I would look at the viability of going by train to avoid the seat-belt issue when travelling by car. It's a distance of about 225 miles, roughly similar to a journey between London and Manchester here in the UK. The train ticket on Wednesday is $71, a bit more than the equivalent fare for London to Manchester of $46.25, but so far so good. BUT IT TAKES 20.25 HOURS!!! How is that possible?! And there is only one train per day I think?! London to Manchester takes 2 hours 10 minutes, and trains depart every 20 minutes during the day!
Anyway, welcome to the club!

Hope all goes well for you. A Houston/Dallas ride should be OK. Seat belt should not be an issue since PM placement is normally upper left chest and you can sit on the passenger side of the vehicle. I just passed 1 yr with PM and use a seat belt pad when driving long distances. Had a 39 heart rate before procedure and woke up from procedure feeling great. Even living on battery power is not bad.

Yesterday I moved to a new place in my mind and realized how bad I felt 'before' and the difference my pacemaker has made.
