MRI after Pacemaker

I had a Medtronic pacemaker about 18 months.  I need a MRI on my Knee.  The doctor has an open MRI.  Some people say that you must be in a closed MRI.  The Medtronic rep says it must be a closed MRI.  My ortho says the open has less power than an Open MRI,   Does anyone have any experience in this matter?

The doctors need to speak, get your orthopedist to call the cardiologist. There is a very specific protocol to follow when they do an mri with a pacemaker. The cardiologist will  have to approve it and most likely Medtronic will be there for the procedure. I would trust the Medtronic rep to know more about it than the orthopedist, but the cardiologist is going to make the call.

The docs and the Medtronic rep need to talk. Even some cardiologists are not up to speed on the MRI with a PM protocol.  The MRI tech should have had some specific training for MRI with a PM.  A medtronic rep should be there to perform the adjustment to the PM for the MRI and to restore the PM after the MRI.

As for my pacemaker (almost 7 years old) I like to think of it in the terms of the old Timex commercial - takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
