Rapid Heart Rate

PMs are often implanted to treat a very low heart rate (bradycardia). The PM can be set to kick in when your heart rate is below a certain rate, often 60 BPM. If you also have arrythmias, the medications prescribed to treat arrythmias typically lower your HR so the PM is needed to counteract that. Your PM cannot stop a rapid heart rate which often is a symptom of afib. I really feel as though you have been given very little information about your PM and other cardiac related issues that you appear to have. I hope that you have a post op follow up appointment with your EP or cardiologist soon and will make a list of your questions and concerns.

When your heart goes too slow or out of sync, the pacer will kick in. When your heart goes too fast, the pacer will just sit back and watch. It can't do anything to stop the heart from beating on its own. Caffeine and dehydration can cause tachy, but often it just happens. If it's dangerously fast, if it's afib, or if it bothers you, there are medications to slow it down.

I just want to share about the quality of life after my pacemaker, and hopefully increase awareness that lifestyles do not have to be drastically modified just because we are pacemaker recipients.
