Has anyone gone back to soccer after having an ICD fit? I ref and I love it but it requires a lot of arm movement! I had mine fit on 8/3/15 and after about 20 days in and out of the hospital (a lot of problems) I went back to reffing mid Oct. I find myself in a lot of pain still! I have seen my doc for all of 2 seconds when being admitted after a 12 game weekend. He said my pain was from all the cpr they did, however, my pain isn't there. It's all in my left side and armpit area! I'm not giving it up in only 32 I love it and it pays great! I feel to young to be having such problems!

Pain on waving arms around
by Selwyn - 2016-01-09 05:01:01
Personally I swim, sometimes for as long as 1 hour.
This activity needs full arm movements ( front crawl, back stroke etc.) every few seconds - no problems.
It may be that you need to GRADUALLY stretch up the muscles involved. It sounds as if you have just gone from nothing to waving your arms around. Muscles that are not used shrivel. I would be thinking about getting fit gradually. Perhaps a physiotherapist can help? There are sports physios to help sporty people. You can then wave goodbye to your pain.

Flipping people off would be awesome! I mainly use my left arm to raise my flag for out of bounds and off sides or fouls. Then my whistle is in my right hand so you signal goal kicks and corners with your left arm. It's a hard habit to change after so many years! The doc have me the okay to go back, and then the NP compared it to having a zippo in my chest! The problem is that I don't think it is anchored in because of how much it moves! I haven't done a game in 2 months doing my best not to move My left and no heavy lifting and it still hurts!

I was only out a month and a half. I've been reffing for a few years so the muscles are built up. I don't think I was out long enough for that problem. I went back slowly in oct, even had to pass a few tournaments up because of the hole they put in my heart and the pneumothorax they gave me! Also it sits on top of all my muscles is just under the skin. But in Nov I went back hard I did 9 games one weekend and 11 another weekend, only because I had to make that Christmas money! But I haven't done any games since the weekend before Thanksgiving and I still hurt. And the season doesn't start again until February! My gamess last anywhere from 50 minutes to 90 minutes. The doc cleared me for my games so I don't understand the pain?

I wasn't really self-conscious about it. I didn't even know I had one until around six or seven years old. I just thought I had a rock in my side.

well let's see, you have a foreign object in your shoulder which in and of itself causes a certain degree of discomfort. Then you are raising that arm with high frequency flipping people off during soccer tournaments. The muscles, and assorted other accessories where your ICD is mounted are being pulled to and fro against that foreign object. Then there are the nerves which run through, yeah, you probably do experience some discomfort.
All I can suggest is stop flipping people off with your left hand.
