For how long after the procedure should ice packs be used, 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off?
Is the purpose for doing so only to prevent swelling... or more likely for the pain? - Of course a painkiller was prescribed so that should deal with that not the ice per se.

I am not thinking that they are needed or that everyone should use them; and I am sure not everyone (being literal or not) thinks everyone should use them.
The nurse said to and I figured I'd ask what they know or what they or their family member(s) or friend(s) have done.

Be very cautious using ice packs.... any extremes in temperature ...Hot or cold- can have serious detrimental effects?

If you watch the clock and don't fall asleep with it, you won't do yourself any harm icing. Ice reduces swelling/bruising and pain. I'd prefer to ice than take meds because I have a history of problems with pain meds, so I'm a big fan of icing. 20 on/20 off is probably excessive. I'm no medical professional but I've never done it more than a handful of times a day for more than a couple of days. After that, I just do it when it's bothering me, mostly if I've overdone it a bit. Don't feel compelled to ice if you don't want to, just remember it's there if you want it.

I used ice packs for the first four days continuously. Worked great for me. Definitely helped with pain, plus the doc told me too!
Didn't need it

i am almost 2 weeks out from my implant. I never felt the need to ice and only needed OTC pain meds for the first couple of days. Still having issues with bra straps and my seatbelt and hoping that will resolve as the healing process continues.

I had a pacemaker when I was 11. I never once thought I wasn't a 'normal kid' nor was I ever treated differently because of it. I could do everything all my friends were doing; I just happened to have a battery attached to my heart to help it work.

I don't think that ice-packs need to be routinely used
I know that ice can reduce incision pain post- surgery but not everyone needs it
I didn't , I didn't need to , I had no swelling.and very little pain Some people on here seem to think that everyone should use ice and I've never understood why. If you need it , try it, till the pain subsides . I hope that you don't need it.
