Dieting

Hi, one year ago yesterday I had biventricular with defibrillator. My ejection fraction has gone from 25 to 60!! Wow I've never felt better. My health has never been better.
However, I need to lose about 5- 8kg, I work in an office, like walking, do Pilates but can't shake off the kilos. I do confess to eating a bit of chocolate( not that much, a few squares per night). Any tips? Should I do Jenny Craig? Wright Watchers? Lite n Easy? Help!

Check with medical insurance

A lot of companies have medical insurance that also has the nurses' hotline. Quite a few offer various medical support programs. Idea is to lower medical claims which will lower medical insurance rates. They pay less, you pay less. Check with your medical insurance and see if they offer such a program.

Idea of going with your medical insurance is that it shows them you're taking an active interest in your health. Which, in turn can lower your rates. And, since you're working with the nursing staff, it's medically approved. For some things you can even get a prescription which will lower your cost of the program.

Depending upon your problems, there are programs for losing weight, diabetes, and the 10,000 step walking program. That's to name a few.

The other thing is you have a ready source to a nursing program. It's great to have a medical person you can call. They may not always have an answer, but can direct you to someone who can.

I have found that it is the small changes that are best to help lose weight.

Watch the portion sizes. Just take a few less tablespoons each time.

Try to reduce anything that includes added sugars or white flour.

magnesium

Can't add much diet advice, but I notice you like your chocolate and eat a little everyday. The key word is everyday.

A lot of people don't know that craving chocolate is a symptom of magnesium deficiency. Whenever I find myself going to the cabinet for chocolate more than two days in a row, I add an extra magnesium tablet..I still like chocolate, will eat it if it's given to me, but that feeling of w-a-n-t-i-ng it goes away.

weight loss

Reduce calorie intake to less than 2000. Chicken breasts, salmon, lots of vegies, fruit, fiber, water, diet Pepsi, and low fat yogurt. I step on the scale daily at the same time to monitor my progress. I started on Nutrisystem and after 3 months of slow but steady progress, I realized that portion control and snacks were the key.. I went from 190 to 160 and 40" to 36" waist in one year. A big tip is to not have anything in the house that creates temptation (if it is there, I guarantee to will eat it). I now treat myself to a pint of ice cream or three pieces of pizza when I hit 160, then when I gain a few pounds, I cut way back until I am back down to 160. The occasional "Pig Out" gives me something to work towards and look forward to. This has worked for me staying between 160 and 162 for two years. Good Luck.

Bread

I used to go to restaurants just because of the bread, but have largely cut it out of my diet. A couple of years ago, I was advised to get down to 174 lbs and no matter how I exercised, I was stuck about 5lvs over that. I quit bread and it melted right off.

Hi!

That's amazing - i'm having a CRT pacemaker implanted next week and your post has really boosted my optimism. I have a congenital heart disease anyway but gained a lot of weight last year because I was very active and suddenly couldnt be active anymore!! I gained around 60 pounds in total, but have now lost 30pounds of that since going vegan.. it's not for everyone but it certainly helped me at a time when I couldn't exercise to shift the pounds like I usually would have.

Did the CRT pacemaker alone improve your EF or have you started any medications etc?
