What precautions should I take around a microwave oven?
Should I avoid standing too close? Are their any brands that
are problematical? This is the one thing I have yet to re-
solve and therefore I am still uncomfortable around them.

appliances and gadgets

There are virtually no home appliances, gadgets or electronics that cause problems for us. Live your life and don't worry about it. Microwaves haven't caused problems in more than 25 years. Every once in a while you'll still see a sign warning pm patients away, but they are horribly out of date.
Do you like fried eggs?

If you do, you will just LOVE fried eyeballs!
At the frequencies a microwave oven operates at, it will congeal the vitreous fluid in the eye before it affects your PM.
SO, as everyone else says, use the Nuke device, but don't stand there & watch it - it will "DING" when it is finished.

My doctor's advice

I am a ham radio operator and while I knew that it was okay to be around the microwave oven, I was concerned about the radios. My doc told me that at the power I run the radios (200 watts or less) it wouldn't be a problem but to keep my distance from antenna towers. Then he gave me a bit of general advice to use around other people's radios, which might be running up to 1500 watts: "If you're around something and you feel lightheaded or 'funny', move about 5 feet away from it. Your pacemaker will take care of it." So you're okay with the oven, and if you're around something else that radiates power and you feel different, vote with your feet and move!

I just want to share about the quality of life after my pacemaker, and hopefully increase awareness that lifestyles do not have to be drastically modified just because we are pacemaker recipients.
Put on your glasses

Put on your glasses and read your Medtronics manual. It tells you that you don't have to be concerned about microwave ovens.
The people in my step down unit hadn't read the manual either. They tried to tell me I couldn't even be in the same room with a microwave and that I'd have to leave the room if it was turned on. WRONG!
