lifespan of new PM

hi friends i am 20 years old male. my PM was replaced 2 month before and paced for 6.5 years. so my question is that is my new PM will also going to pace for 6.5 years or there are any chances for pacing 10+ years i am patient with CHB my PM is MEDTRONIC DDDR pulse width of pm is 2.5V. also before my last pm replaced i got shock of current from water pump after 3 years of current shock i start feeling my heart rate and after 3 days when i got check up my pm battery was down. the shock was not of high volts but os there chances the PM battery was drained my shock? because after 3 hours i start feeling some symtops. also my doctor said that this new installed pm have better battery life of 12-15 years ! please give me your suggestion about this pm life span. i have no more power to go to surgery after every 6.5 years :(((

Calculated lifespan of PM

by rlandry - 2014-10-08 07:10:29

Hi there. I'm a 60 year old with an ADDRL1 PM, initially placed in April 2011. I had the same experience, I was getting shocked regularly including the Dr's office, you could see my chest pulse. The adjusted to stop the shocking and scheduled me for a new lead. The PM was showing 6.5 yrs remaining life, but that wasn't accurate because the PM calculates based on activity and since that went off the rails, so did the accuracy of the calculation. They installed a new lead in April this year and now the calculation shows closer to 10 yrs. I hope this is helpful

hi rlamdy thanks for your response but i am not getting shock from my pm. i got electric shock from water pump 2 month before amd after 3 hours i start feeling some problems and then at check up doctor said my pm need replacement. so i was asking is that shock drained my pm battery or it was natural. my pm paced me 6.5 years. so i am here to know my new pm will work only 6.5 years oe any chances to work 10+ years my new pm

Let me make sure that ...

....I understand your question.
1) Your first PM was implanted about 7 years ago.
2) It paced for 6.5 years.
3) It was replaced 2 months ago ( August, 2014).
4) You have a Medtronic Kappa 400 PM.
5) You have CHB (Complete Heart Block)
6) Your PM produces a 2.5 volt pacing signal to make your Ventricles contract. (This is a common pacing voltage)
7) Before you had your first PM replaced you got an electric shock at a water pump.
8) The shock was not from high volts (How many volts was it? 120 Volts? 240 Volts?)
9) 3 hours after the shock you felt your heart rate to be different. (You felt symptoms of some kind)
10) 3 days later you had your PM checked and the battery was low, requiring replacement.
11) Your cardiologist (Cardio) said the new PM should have a battery life f 12-15 years.

You have TWO questions:
1) Did the shock at the pump drain your battery?

My Opinion: The shock probably did NOT drain your battery. For two reasons: First reason - 6.5 years is a reasonable battery life. My first battery lasted 7 years pacing my Atrium nearly 100% of the time. IF you have CHB, your Ventricles are probably paced nearly 100% of the time. It is NOT a surprise to me that you only got 6.5 years life out of that battery. Second reason - your body felt the shock because of the electric current flowing through it. That current did not flow through the PM; it flowed around it in its metal case. The electronic parts & the battery inside the case felt nothing because the case protected them. All of the electronics in the PM work at very small voltages and currents. If any electric current from the shock you received got into the PM, it would have caused a massive failure of the electronics and your PM would most likely have instantly stopped working.

I have received many electric shocks and my PM keeps working. That is the experience of many of the people in here.

2) (Your Second Question) We cannot predict accurately battery life. Batteries are improving all the time, so your Cardio may be correct when he said 12-15 years. Only waiting will tell how long the battery will last. ]
You have more power than you think - enjoy the life that your PM has given you and after another 7 years, you should be feeling better. You will be further away from the experience that caused you to get the PM over 7 years ago and feel more comfortable with the PM.

There are many people in this site who have gone many years with PM's for CHB. You will join them.

I hope this has helped you.

your can monitor your predicted battery life by getting a copy of your PM's interrogation report. The PM does it's own calculation of how long the battery might last based on past usage. It is an estimate as your PM can't predict the future usage but it's probably pretty good.

Battery Life

Try not to worry about the battery life span. Like Don said, they are improving our devices all the time.

Just for reference, I have an ICD for almost 6 years now and the last report showed there is 5 more years on the battery.

Try to relax, you'll be fine.

battery life

my first pm lasted 6 years, my second one lasted 10 years 9 months and my last one has an estimated 15 years life span.
There is no exact life span (too many variables involved)
As for the electrical shock, I cannot count the number of times I've been "juiced" over the years.
Stop worrying and enjoy the new life you were given. Your PM will let you know what and when you need to
know what.
welcome aboard!
