Solar flares

Is there anything out there to prevent solar flares from disrupting our devices? I've wrapped my chest in aluminum foil however I don't know if this works or not. Any solutions? Thanks, Starlight

You really don't need to do that

Your device is very well shielded in and of itself and better than that we have the wonderful planetary defense system (magnetosphere) provided by nature that also filters out much of the incoming energy. Cosmic particles can get through this, but as others have pointed out, the odds are so low as to be meaningless.

The mass media are very good at stirring trouble. If I were you, I would put that foil to better use (in the kitchen). You stand more chance of being hit by a bolt of lightening or winning the lottery jackpot.

....these questions when there are Solar Flares. I am tempted to really pull the asker's leg - the Devil is standing at my left shoulder right now, breathing his surfurous breath into my shell-like ear as he eggs me on to write a fantasy that would make HG Wells & JK Rowling proud. BUT.....My Christian upbringing causes me to reject such temptation & - OOOOOOF!!!! elbow him right in the crotch & send him off grunting & moaning. That'll teach "Old Scratch" to screw around w/ me!

Here's the straight skinny - the hot poop - the real gouge on Solar Flares. That is, IF you can handle the truth.

Solar flares are a combination of three things - wickedly hot gasses, electric particles & electromagnetic wave energy. They come at us periodically like a mad bull after a matador with a red cape yelling "OLE!!!!!" They have been doing it since time immemorial - since before my Mother-in-Law was born - & that was well before the dinosaurs.

But when G-D built this beautiful rock we live on, he gave us built-in protection - the magnetic field that comes out of the northern Arctic, curves around to the south & re-enters the Earth at the Antarctic. Now it's NOT a tremendous magnetic field as fields go - nothing like an MRI field, but it is strong enough to capture most of those little electric particles AND their accompanying electro-magnetic fields and guide them spinning in a helix pattern along the magnetic lines of force surrounding our home (like the threads on a machine screw) well above the atmosphere. They have tremendous kinetic energy as they approach earth 'cause there's nothing in space for them to collide with & slow them down. But let them get into that wondrous magnetic field & they are not slowed down, but their direction is changed from a straight line toward earth to that helical machine screw thread path following the magnetic field. Change their direction & they radiate energy; radiate energy & they DO slow down; slow them down & eventually they become harmless to us down below. If you have a steel roof on your house, you can hear them hitting it all the time during a solar flare - they go plink, plink, plink all night long, probably keeping the dog awake, since the plinking sound is probably above the frequency that we can sense. OOOOOOOF!!!!! Take THAT, Satan! Sorry 'bout that, but he got over the first elbow to the gonads & came back for more. Tough old bugger , that Old Scratch"!

Back to my narrative. Now WE are safe from the particles, but our highly sensitive commo & GPS nav equipment are not. They have satellite components that are waaaaaay up there - some of it at 22,000miles up there. The Earth's mag field does not necessarily protect them. So, they may get hit by a stream of very high energy particles and the accompanying "Cosmic" Rays that are nothing more than extremely high frequency radio waves - higher than the X-Rays we use. They travel in straight lines, nothing affecting them, until their own fields interact w/ the magnetic field of Earth, and they are deflected slightly, but continue on to hit our Mother Earth. We are protected somewhat by the atmosphere, which absorbs some of them, but go to Denver or atop Mt Everest & they are measurably stronger than at Miami, Fla or at the Dead Sea. They still are nowhere near strong enough to affect your PM/ICD.

The beautiful Aurora that you can see as far south as Kansas on a cold, clear night in winter is the result of waves of the particles interacting w/ the magnetic field. It is the particles having their direction changed & radiating the frequency of energy we call light that we can see. So go out & find Dorothy & her Ruby Slippers, take her on a date to the pig pen & watch the show! It's free, beautiful & safe - as long as you buy an aluminum collander to protect your head. OOOOF!!!!! there he was again!

You're joking right?

Why do you think a solar flare will do anything to your device, or that Al foil would do anything? Perhaps if the flare is super strong and the solar flare is in the right position and you are in the right location on earth at the right time and make sure you're exposed to it long enough? Though seems very unlikely all these things would line up.

I think I'd be more worried about getting struck by lightening.

In case you are serious

Try not to worry, you will be fine.
