Daughter is getting an icd on the 19th

Hi all. My daughter will be receiving an icd next week and I have some questions. First she has had increasing v tach for the last five months. She has congenital heart disease and has had four open heart surgeries so I'm assuming this is from scar tissue? Either way she has to have it. How difficult is the procedure and the recovery. She's seventeen so close to be an adult but she is a very small girl. Any advice or input ?

Hello, I had an ICD implanted on the 18 of December 2012. I had a double wire procedure. The procedure took about 1 1/2 hours. I was released from the hospital on the 20th. The scar was a little sore and it took a while to get rid of that feeling. Was hard to sleep on my left side at first but have no problem now. I was in the military and was forced to retire because of the ICD but to paraphrase my doctor " I can do everything that I did prior to needing the surgery. I have always and still love to run. I am still running almost 7 miles a day (I have slowed down but not due to ICD getting older). As far as the recovery I started running 2 months later even though my doctor said I could start 1 month later. Her Take all instructions from her doctor because we heal differently. Good luck and she will do fine.

HI Heartmama,
I have a Medtronic ICD since 2009, it provides my DR. with all the inform. they need, especially when a problem develops. Even if she's away from home the info is available (it is a great device)
to both a local & her regular MD. The ICD is easily inserted, and takes a month or two to get comfortable with its presence. It has saved my life & I hope your daughter rests more comfortably know she has a device to protect her.
Good luck & god bless
