Mammogram with ICD
Hi. Today I had a mammogram. It's been 3 months since I got the ICD. I was very nervous about any pain I might feel if the machine hit or squeezed the ICD. Besides the usual awkwardness of the situation, it went well. There was no contact with the device or the scar. I wanted to share my experience with the hope that I can help someone not waste so much time as I did worrying. I hope it helps.

I wish mine had been as easy as yours. I had one of the new digital mammograms. Th radiographer shoved the machine to the left, roughly pushing over my pm. I yelled as it hurt lots. She exclaimed, "Oh dear, did that hurt" My leads are now sticking out more and are a bit uncomfortable. I am reluctant to have another one when the time comes.

Talk to your Doctors about a breast ultrasound along with a mammo (same time).
The mammos are important but if they cannot see behind the PM/ ICD (my case too) they can also do an ultrasound and "get around it".....and no pain!

I realize this topic was discussed back in July, but I wanted to post for any new ladies reading. I have had my ICD since 2005 (on my second device), I have had yearly mammograms since, I am a big breasted girl as well, but I have been very fortunate and my technicians have been amazing and there has been no additional pain. I go to a Imaging Center and this is all they do there, my GYN advised me to go there after implant as they had good back ground of ladies with PM's and ICD's

I live an extremely normal life now and my device does NOT hinder me in any way.

I just had my first one since implant yesterday and was just about to post. I had a good tech who I guided a lot. It went fine but she could not get as good a picture on pm side because it would have squished right on the pm. When I told her no, she listened. We figured it was better than nothing. What surprises me today however is that I am sore on my left (pm) side. oh well, just another challenge we deal with.
