Hi, I am 6 weeks post op for a pm. I seem to still be having problems with anxiety. Have been having high blood pressure lately and wondering if that could be because of anxiety. Just a few days ago broke into tears for no reason. Has anyone else experience this. I am so thankful to have the pm because I received it due to complete heart block and thought I would die.I feel I have a great second chance on life so cant explain all these emotions. Have periods of day when I have no problem but then will just hit me. Don't know if it is because I am supposed to be monitoring my bp daily and this makes me anxious having to keep checking on myself.

Anxiety

When sonething like this happens we are suddenly aware of everything our heart does! It can cause anxiety, depression and any number of other things. I was in a bad way shortly after receiving my first unit ( I am now on my 3rd) I went through every emotion you can imagine but it did get better. There are lots of people here to who are good at "talking you down" and someone will always be there to help! My turn to creedo is that without it I wouldn't be here! In time you'll accept!

I have had anxiety problems on and off for year. What helps me at this time is to consciously breathe slowly: 5 counts in; hold a few counts; five counts out. Think pleasant thoughts. For me, just a sudden noise, an fleeting unpleasant thought, can make an immediate irregular heart beat. When you are aware of how much you CAN help in controlling your blood pressure, it can become a practice that you will enjoy. I have had my pm for 4 months, and most of the time don't even think of it. It was all consuming at first, so I understand you completely.

Even if they are happy to have the PM, for some people getting a pacemaker is a big adjustment. It just is.
On the lower left of your screen under Forums, you'll find the heading "Coping." Click on it and you'll see that you are not alone. Lots of people have gone through it, and come out the other side.
Blessings. The support you can find here will help. Keep coming back.

Stop taking your BP daily
by Grateful Heart - 2014-06-16 05:06:08
If you know that is upsetting you, stop.....for now. Let your Doctor know how it makes you feel, he/ she should understand. You are probably not helping your bp by taking it daily right now anyway. They'll be plenty of time for that, you are still in the early stage of recovering....emotionally.
Some of us deal better with this initially than others. It doesn't matter how long it takes, as long as you get there....and you will. 6 weeks post op is not a long time.
It is not uncommon for heart patients to have emotions that are all over the place. It will get better with time. Think back to the first week post op.....are you feeling better at this point?
Needing a pacemaker/ ICD is scary in the beginning, learning that our heart needs help and can't beat efficiently on it's own.....that's a lot to take in. The great news is our little devices can fix all of that for us....truly amazing!
Learn all you can here, ask questions and read past posts.
Take care,
