Total ICD replacement

Have recently posted re husband he has had ICD for just over 2 years and is currently in hospital awaiting total ICD replacement after 2 leads have apparently broken. He had a fall upon coming out of bath and his consultant has come to the conclusion that upon falling he has hit his collarbone which has apparently a sharp edge to it and this has sliced through like a machette(his words)and broke LV lead. His RV has fracture also and don't know whether this happened at same time? They took him off warfarin last Monday upon admittance and started fragmin on Wednesday till Fri.He has now been transferred to London Hospital to await op and Doctors said they are putting him back on warfarin as that is how they do it when they do op.Has anyone else ever stayed on blood thinning medication when they have had surgery-previously he has come off it for 4 days prior to any surgery. So good to have this site when you loved one is having problems.any comments greatly appreciated.

Interesting they would go to Warfarin

Chronologically, I was on Warfarin, Pradaxa, and now Xarelto. Always when I had anything surgical performed, I was told to stop taking the anticoagulant ("blood thinner" is not the correct term, but is universal, like "Xerox"). The only "good" thing about Warfarin is if you start bleeding out, they can give you a massive Vitamin K shot and you will start clotting and theoretically stop bleeding. That reminds me of the time an ER doctor told me, when I was in getting a finger sutured for being careless, "You know, all bleeding eventually stops ". Sorry for the sick humor. This is the first time I have heard of a collar bone fracture taking out leads. Sounds plausible. Something to remember and take precautions. Hope he recovers well.

BROKEN COLLAR BONE???

Didn't know about Vitamin K shot if you start bleeding out-thanks that's good to know.Interesting that hubby said it is written on his notes that he broke his collarbone -this was obviously written on his notes at local hospital by Doctors but he never went to hospital and had x Ray to confirm this after his fall.Another doctor came round with students and said he had a technical fault with his ICD -don't suppose we will find out what really happened and would they tell us?

They will tell you if you insist.

Don't let them double talk you and push you away. It's your right to know everything they find. Be assertive.

I interpreted your original note as saying he had broken his collar bone and it cut a lead. Sorry if I assumed too much.

Good luck.
