Adrenaline

Some things I don't think through until I am face to face with the issue. So my wife's Step-Dad, whom we both love very, very dearly, is on his death bed (probably within days) with a body filled with cancer. Doctors say "there is nothing more" they can do. Also, my wife and I have a near 24 year old son whose life (by our standards) is a train wreck. So when my wife's cell phone woke us both from a very deep sleep at 1:30 this morning, you can imagine the immediate thoughts racing through my brain. My adrenaline level shot through the ceiling, but for the first time, my heart did not follow suit. I am PM dependent with rate response with low of 70 and high of 120, but apparently adrenaline does not influence that. So after I gained my wits, I realized that my heart was beating hard, but only at 70bpm. So do I have that right? The adrenaline will cause the heart (in my case) to beat harder but not faster? I remember lying there as I attempted to get back to sleep and was thinking "wow". Oh, the purpose of the call, the 24 year old "butt dialed" my wife's number. I am getting very close to completely severing our relationship with our son.

rate response

The settings will affect how sensitive it is but rate response is influenced by movement. Some models also use breathing.

So sorry you and your wife are going through a hard time. Prayers for peace for you.

Hi!

Yes, you've got that right, Adrenaline will not make your pacemaker's rate response increase your heart rate. This is definitely true to accelerometer and minute ventilation based rate response sensors. Closed-loop stimulation (CLS) has been proven to respond to mental stress, but I guess no one can guarantee you that it will respond appropriatly in situations like you just described. I had a pacemaker with CLS implanted two weeks ago, and am going to find out what kind of mental stress really triggers it. I had one incident so far where I thought my heart rate increased a bit due to fear: on the way back from the hospital when the taxi driver almost caused an accident. But it all happened so quickly that I'm not 100% sure that my heart rate did in fact increase.

Best wishes
Inga

You know you're wired when...

Your pacemaker receives radio frequencies.
