Lead Cover Disinegrating

I've had my pacemaker for about 7 years now, and (thankfully!) I've haven't had any real problems. I have swallowing syncope (I faint/get heart block when I eat) but the pacemaker has fixed most of the symptoms. Anyways, lately I have been feeling sharp, stabbing pains that last for a couple of seconds where my pacemaker is (in my abdomen). The pain doesn't make me cry but it does cause me to catch my breath and kind of gasp. I've told my doctors and they did a test and it didn't show anything but my one doctor thinks the lining of my lead might be wearing away. I've been feeling the pain more often lately (once every couple of days) and I'm not sure what to do. My parents say if it is serious enough, I should get it replaced but I don't think the pain is that bad, yet. Anyone else have similar symptoms? Thanks!

Pricking feeling

by vbilbrey - 2013-03-27 09:03:39

I've been having what feels like metal wires/needles pricking me from inside (near the PM site). Very distracting. I've had this one since 2007 and am recently noticing this. I have three leads in me (one from my initial PM that is no longer in use) and the other two for my dual PM. I don't know if the original lead is deteriorating or what is going on. If it reallly bothers me tomorrow I'll call my Dr. but I have an appt. in April for my semi-annual checkup so I'm hoping it can wait 'til then. But I understand your concern. Maybe you can get a second opinion from another cardiologist/electrophysiologist just to be sure? Hope it works out for you.

Lead problems

My pacemaker was placed 3 yrs ago, have been having problems with leads in particular the atrial lead. Cardiologist says the leads are rubbing against my clavicle therefore wearing off the insulation and causing the lead to fray. They have reprogrammed it twice but I still feel pretty lousy. Upper chamber pacing at 7 percent where the need is the least the lower chamber paces at100 percent and am totally dependent. Have seen the cardiologist at least 8 times since January much to his dismay and my frustration. Going to Cleveland Clinic next week for second opinion.

Went to Cleveland Clinic, was treated with the utmost professionalism, respect and compassion, Dr. Validated all of my symptoms and then some. Will have lead extraction & replacement in 2-3 weeks!
