Competitive Cycling

Hi Folks,
I am new to the post, my name is Doc Savage, and glad to be here. As a bit of background, I am 62, an endurance athlete and race bicycles. On 4 Aug 2012, I collapsed on a training ride in cardiac arrest. Just as collapsed a firetruck drove by, saw me and turned around and was on me in a minute and a half. After CPR and two shocks later, they got my heart started. Test revealed my LAD was nearly 100% blocked. Had two stents inserted and left hospital 2 days later. I had an EP study on 11 Jan 2013 and an ICD implanted. Currently in the healing stage. With that said, any competitive cyclist out there that have returned to training and racing their bikes? Also, anyone lifting weights with an ICD implant? Any issues with their implant?

Best Regards,
Doc

...............................a good start would be to go to Top Right on the Home Page and punch in 'Cycling' into the 'Search' button.

It is way too early at this point...give it a month then:

1 gentle turbo work
2 gentle road work, ideally on a mountain bike
3 keep gears nice and low
4 keep off the hills
5 keep in the saddle..no honking up hills

Best wishes ..Tattoo Man ( best 10 mile TT-22.27 )

Welcome Doc,

Yes there are, I'm sure you'll hear from them. Lots of athlete folks on here, of which i"m not one. So with that welcome and I'll get out of the way. Blessings Jean

Train hard, race easy.....

Firstly, love the name Doc Savage, brilliant! A few wise words from Tattoo man (long time no speak fella...) but absolutely agree with everything that he said. Your story is incredible. Like many of us, its crazy to think how close we come to seeing the white purely gates, and in the case of yourself thank goodness for the chap in the truck who turned around - an absolute blessing. I am a keen cyclist too, taking part in local races, sportives, and going to do my first Crit series this summer but....... You really do need to take your time and build up to any kind of level you once rode. As Tattoo man may remember, I was all geared up to do the caledonia etape (one of only two closed road races in the uk) last may when out of nowhere and totally unexpected my ICD fired... What's worse is I was only 6 miles into a 84 mile race. I had actually been training brilliantly up until the race, spending a week in Majorca in the hills, doing 100km every other day.... Then boom!!!! Off it went! My cardio waved a big banner saying "told you so" and we have a strong love hate relationship but for me..... Its worth the chance! I'm totally alive when on the bike or running, it's what makes me tick. I just need to slow down a little. As for yourself, make sure you speak to your cardio, listen to your body, but as tatooo man forgotbto say......tt10 mile...22 min...... That's in his memory bank from when he was 19! Ha ha ignore that time, ignore that challenge! Ha

Hope your continued recovery goes well. Keep us in the know....
Best

..........................I did my '22.27' in 1983, when I was 33 years old. Now, if my sums are correct...that is your age right now...........

Best wishes from the East Midlands Tattoo Man

I wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for pacemakers. I've had mine for 35+ years. I was fainting all of the time and had flat-lined also. I feel very blessed to live in this time of technology.
