Running

Whilst running I keep having a problem where I will 'burp' and my heart rate will drop from around 115 to 85. Sometimes it will go immediately back up and I carry on running other times it will stay low and I have to walk. I have always been fit and a keen runner. Has anyone else had this type of problem?

They should be able to adjust your settings to prevent this. It's called rate drop response, it jumps in and paces when you suddenly drop.

..........many of us who run,.. members of this Forum,..will have lost count of those who are runners that report a ...flat spot...decline in performance...inability to hit high spots...etc ..etc.

Fact is,..dont know.

Tracey is really knowledeable, and , hey tell your Technician EXACTLY what you feel / want.

After 20 mins of average running I pull up ..gagging and wanting to be sick ( Never happens ).....45 secs of regular breathing,..then I can run all night.

Can we get to the bottom of this very annoying issue ,,??

Vasovagal response

It sounds like you may be having a vasovagal response. Belching and swallowing can trigger a response by the vagus nerve to slow the heart rate, drop the blood pressure and can lead to fainting.

It can be hard to diagnose and the treatment is usually just trying to avoid the trigger. When you run do you breathe a lot through your mouth? If so, you may be swallowing excessive amounts of air which is making you belch. Try to only breathe through your nose if possible. i run too and I find myself breathing a lot through my mouth. I don't have the problems you are having but I have to keep gum in my mouth so I don't dry out. :-)

Before you run try drinking a sports drink. This will increase the salt and fluids in your blood stream and will increase your blood volume. The increase in blood volume may alleviate the drop in heart rate. It may be helpful also to try calf/shin compression sleeves or compression socks when you run. This will help blood return from the lower extremities back to the heart and increase the circulating blood volume.

Do you take any blood pressure meds? If so, talk to your doctor. Your dose may be able to be adjusted.
