Bow Hunt w/ PM

Hi All!

I have a pacemaker inmplanted on the left side of my chest and I'm right handed. Is it OK to shoot a bow? I would think it would be because I will pull with my right arm, but there will still be force on my left, so I wanted some different views on this. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Thanks GREAT NEWS! I didn't figure there would be any issues, but thought I would see what others thought. Better get practicing on that! :)

I live in southeast Iowa - around the Jefferson County area. It's beautiful here, and fall is my favorite time of year!

That's an awesome story - that would be really neat, but a big surprise at the time that's for sure!

I'll have to post some pictures when I go shootin!

Bow Hunt - no sweat

Been at least 6 months - no problems at all. Not like you are firing a 10 Guage Browning w/ the butt against your PM.

You only have a few weeks left before Iowa bow season starts - better get out there & practice.

BTW - start out slowly w/ the practice & work your way up. When you let go of string, there will be a sudden release of force on left shoulder - you need to see how your PM will adapt. Shouldn't be any problems after this time.

Where in Iowa? I used to hunt SE Iowa near Middletown w/ shotgun. Son hunted bow in same area. He was a young teenager, so I got a lot of prime time napping in the Iowa woods in pleasant fall weather. One beautiful Sat afternoon was surprised by a sound to my immediate right rear. Awoke w/ a start & turned my head to be nose to nose w/i about 5 ft of a good sized buck grubbing for acorns under my tree. Questionable as to which of us was more surprised.

Hunting

Denise - sorry your buddy lost his eye sight. That would be devistating. Do you hunt any now?

SUPERSALE - thanks for the advice, but I think if I had to have their help shooting the bow it would take all of the fun out of it and it would be pointless for me to shoot.

I won't go out hunting for a while. More just target shooting for now, but make no mistake bow hunting will follow shortly! :)

Don't forget - you are not in...

...the final days of training for the Olympics! Limit the number of arrows you shoot per day at the beginning. Every time you let go of the string there will be a slight shockwave that will propagate back from your left hand toward the PM. That might be irritating at first to all the scar tissue around the PM.

I assume that you use a compound bow, so it should not be quite as bad as with a recurve, but the upper body is still in compression across the chest area while you hold the string back at your cheek.

Good hunting!

My eight year old son had a pacemaker since he was 6 months old. He does very well, plays soccer, baseball, and rides his bike. I am so glad he is not ashamed of his pacemaker. He will proudly show his "battery" to anyone.
