Golf, pushups, barbells...

I''ve had my PM one year. Just to play it safe, I've waited this long to get back to playing golf. I was told that it's okay to play golf. However, what do you think about lifting barbells or doing push-ups? I'd like to start a "Body Pump" class again and it can be quite strenuous. Any thoughts on this?

Let Me Guess the Dr's answer...

...NO! Very few cardios will approve anything that might expose them to liability if something goes wrong. "But he said it was OK," would be your testimony in a mal-practice suit trial if something did go astray.
This is one of those things that I'd talk to him/her about & make a judgment as to whether or not you should do it based upon the expression on Dr's face & strength of their denial if they indeed do say "No."
I wanted to go on a 20 mile hike about 18 mo. post op & asked cardio about it. He never would commit to a "Yes" answer. Nearly his exact words were "Don, why should I tell you 'No,' you'd do it anyway!" Which was correct. And he was legally off the hook! IMHO, had he had any serious reservations about it, he'd have argued strongly w/ me.
So, I went on the hike. PM & heart did just fine. Otherwise a disaster - I tripped over a 2 ft boulder in the dark, fell & bruised my left thigh to the point I could not walk.
You would be wise to get his/her counsel as to the risks YOU might bear, due to any unusual situations you have. After a year, everything should be so well healed & scarred over that it cannot possibly come loose. I took on a Jeep Cherokee doing 35 mph w/ my right shoulder a mere 9 weeks post implant for a new lead. Broke most of my ribs & collarbone on right side, but zero effect on PM & leads.
I would restrict my lifting to weights you can lift easily & smoothly. Don't be what my Cardio calls a "Bulgarian Weight Lifter," going for an Olympic record in the "Clean & Jerk." (We've had some interesting conversations"!) Oh, & don't do any pushups where you throw yourself violently up & clap your hands while in the air!

You've wait much longer than necessary! After 2-3 months you were as healed as you were going to get. Ask your dr to make sure your heart is up to strenuous exercise but if the pm fixes your problem, it should be fine.
There are some drs that recommend not doing strenuous chest exercises but my dr said no problem. I've been paced almost 20 yrs now and don't hold back, no problems and my dr loves that I'm so active. The last 18 mos I've been doing Crossfit 5 days a week- very strenuous, lots of push ups, pull ups, heavy barbells, running, jumping on boxes... I do it all except ring rows (inverted push up, pulling yourself up on the rings), they tend to aggravate my scar tissue. Harmless, but it doesn't feel good so I do push presses instead.
Don, I was doing clean/split jerks yesterday, but I don't lift quite as much as the Olympians :o)

I was told do not do any gym work, pushups, b bells, k bells, lifting no strain on the arm/shoulder for 6 more weeks, a total of 2 months after PM surgery.
So, aerobic it is for now...walking,bike, stair climber...
Just going to watch my diet close and prepare in other ways spiritually, physically and mentally for the word "Go".

I've never had a problem with my model.
Maybe you should consult with your doctor?

I would assume that each person is different and probably your medical specialist (doctor) can best assess if it is fine with you commencing a "Body Pump" class however in my own personal case, my doctors informed me that I could not return to the gym until 2-3 months following my recent surgery. I would not take this timeframe as being a green light for you, I would consult with my medical professional (doctor) prior to doing anything rash.
