I sm the recipient of a new pacemaker. I believe the leads are covered by some type of silicone coating and I am very concerned. I developed antibodies to silicone back in the early 90's along with a connective tissue disease related to Lupus. This has caused great suffering. I am sensitive to a number of things and various drugs. It is my understanding that silicone can become a part of various body proteins, thus resulting in antibodies to the involved proteins. I realize that this concern might be best directed to an Immunologist, but have no connection to one. If there is anyone reading this list, who might know more information about this, I would appreciate a response.
Thank you,
Cathie

Having problems

This was discussed, though briefly, since it was an emergency situation. I was told by the pacemaker manufacturer representative that there was nothing else. This is not true.
The manufacturer sent a test kit containing tiny amounts of materials used in the various components and I am supposed to undergo testing to determine if I am allergic to any of these.
My Electrophysiologist is willing to replace this, should testing indicate the necessity...

I am very happy with mine. I am in the best shape of my life. I lift weights, compete, bike, golf and swim.
I hope all goes well.

The only thing I can say is that if I were you I would have discussed this before the implant. Lupus is an illness that results in all sorts of complications. You should call your doctor and talk about this. See what they suggest, maybe they can give you some sort of suppressant that would ensure a smooth healing and acceptance of your implant. I wish you the best of luck and post a note with the results.
